I'd say they and other nations like Venezuela, Nicaragua, Mexico under PRI, to name a few, all had their elections questioned continuously and it was an in place dictatorship that kept them from having fair and open elections. Automatic voter registration upon getting a driver's license
Registering 16 and 17-year-olds to vote and then saying they can't until they're 18
Using ballot drop boxes
No voter ID requirements
No purging of voter rolls
Not allowing poll watchers free access to observe the process

Those are all questionable practices, and there are more. I'll say it again: If questionable practices are used in an election, then the election is questionable. If you want elections to not be questioned, eliminate questionable practices to the greatest extent possible.
