It depends how you interpret statistics. These figures include, for example, drunken fighting, a national sport over here due to our drinking culture. As mentioned earlier, take a look at the homicide rates:

US: 5.9 per 100k
England and Wales: 1.6 per 100k

This is a weak argument. If you compare the number of guns deaths in proportion to size of population, the US is far higher than the UK. What this indicates is that, whilst gun crime does exist in the UK, it is multiples higher in the US, where there is little effort to restrict the numbers in the general public.

This demonstrates that the notion of arming as many of the population as possible doesn't act as a deterrent to gun crime, whilst control works considerably better.

This doesn't coincide with our continuing decrease in violence (both gun and non gun related) and UK. continual increase in the past decade.

Of course correlation does not indicate causation. The truth is America has always been a more violent place, even 100 years ago when gun restrictions in both countries were non existent (except for those regarding Irish or Blacks, because you know we can't trust minorities with guns).

I would say that we have by far the more violent history.

You also have an 800 year head start. And a more homogenous culture because of it. Its not an equal comparision because there are factors other than gun ownership that contribute to crime. We have a higher poverty rate for example.
