It would be nice if criminal presidents at least produce foreign policy benefits, but I don't think Kim is dim: he needs his weapons to stay alive, after all.

It is true that if NK does denuclearize and the Korean armistice ended and relationships between the two Koreas are normalized it will be a great foreign policy achievement. You’re a long way from being there and I will admit that Trump is incredibly unique for a Republican by having a foreign policy that doesn’t boil down to “kill brown people” and as a Democrat I’m extremely pleased to see Trump embrace liberal internationalism.

Now if he was only consistent.

That's because, as an incredibly prescient article posted on here stated, Trump is a pragmatist first and foremost. Look I know it could all go titsup but Pompeo and Mattis are no fools and they won't agree anything without rigorous inspections. They have learnt the lessons from previous failures. I just find it amazing how Trump ischaracterised as a bumbling idiot yet no other president has come this far already. I sometimes think he, like emperor Claudius, uses that to his advantage.

I agree. He’s certainly no Republican and can you imagine the GOP’s consternation at his meeting Kim by the party? If Obama had done that can you imagine how the GOP would have howled in outrage as the did when Obama engaged with Iran?

The fact is Trump is right to engage with NK and Obama was correct to engage with Iran and Trump was wrong to unilaterally end the Iranian agreement. Which is what I meant by his inconsistency.

Sorry but the Iran deal was a shitty one, leaving them the ability to produce weapons grade uranium is not needed or necessary. Although I do wish he would come down hard on the Israelis and force them to allow inspections.

True but it was an important first step. Time will tell if Kim is being an honest player. I support the President in his efforts with NK and criticize his policy towards Iran.

this moment is historic, and a beam of hope for millions of people currently living under horrible inhumane conditions in NK.
And closer to home a chance to denuclearize , by removing a threat to not only the region, but the entire world.

it's bitter sour grape non-sense to paint this in any other way, yet anyway.
 
The only thing that happened was Trump and Kim met face to face. Which side wins with that?

Fail summit. Nothing accomplished. No CVID, no end to war, no inspectors on the ground, nothing dismantled.
