There has never been a strong faction of separatists in eastern Ukraine, they would have been long finished without direct intervention of the russian military.

The actual worth of these "ties" can be seen when having a look at Belarus and Kazakhstan, Ukraine had good reasons to prefer economic ties with the EU over Putin's ECU. Ironically, his approach to re-establish old Soviet might has only made NATO more popular than ever.

Trump is right to try to hold NATO member nation's feet to the $fire about that.
But it seems what Trump has done instead is to fuel the sentiment for a separate Western European alliance that would exclude the U.S. from its protection.
