the Ukrainian vessels were sailing between two Ukrainian ports: from Odessa in the Black Sea to Mariupol in the Azov Sea. The only waterway that connects these is the Kerch Strait between Crimea and mainland Russia. Kiev says it notified Moscow in advance that its navy ships would be sailing through the area. Moscow denies that it was given warning.

While both Russia and Ukraine have freedom of navigation in the Kerch Strait under a 2003 treaty, there are detailed technical rules on how vessels should pass through the narrow, complex waterway. All traffic in the area is controlled by the Crimean sea port of Kerch, and every ship should contact the facility, report her route and destination, and receive permission to sail through the Strait.

krainian vessels continued their journey despite warnings from the Russian authorities. The Ukrainian Navy said the military vessels were sailing from the port city of Odessa to the Azov port of Mariupol as part of a scheduled routine transfer and claimed that it warned the Russian authorities about the trip in advance.

The FSB denounced the actions of the Ukrainian vessels as "provocation." A video released by Russian authorities shows the Ukrainian vessels maneuvering in close proximity to the Russian ones.

At midnight, the FSB released a statement, saying that Russian warships had to open fire after the three Ukrainian ships ignored "legal demands to stop" and continued "performing dangerous maneuvers."

Three Ukrainian sailors were wounded and given medical assistance, while the ships were seized. The group of ships that were heading to the strait from the Azov Sea turned back to their port.

round midnight, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko instructed the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine (NSDC) to convene for an emergency meeting proposing to impose martial law. The council has moved forward with the motion. The Verkhovna Rada, the Ukrainian parliament, will vote on whether to approve the decision in an extraordinary session on Monday.

Poroshenko stated that martial law will not mean immediate mobilization of troops and said that no offensive operations are being planned.

If such is the case why doesn't Russia return the ships and captured sailors? Obviously they made their point

It is about economics, the strait is important for Ukraine to ship their exports, Russia is attempting a squeeze play on their economy. Next they will wait to see the response, from Europe, the US, and if it will be a joint US/European response

Interesting note is that Trump has been mute, while nearly all of Europe has issued statements of disgust, the world has heard nothing from Trump, busy tweeting just about everything under the sun, but nothing on Russia's move

Give you kudos for posting an actual issue

So your Russian friends violate International Law, and your gawd Trump ignores it. Even Haley has more balls then Trump:

Trump is clueless. The only straight he understands is in a card game. Can someone send him a memorandum fro Fox news so he can assess his Hobbesian choice?

"Notification procedure" sounds like standard Kremlin word games.

There has always been elements in the Russian government - and I think Putin is one of them - who do not consider Ukraine to be a real country. They consider it a southern extension of the historic East Slavic homelands, traditionally under the leadership of Moscow/Saint Petersburg.

In my opinion, this has nothing to do with "notification procedures" and everything to do with the Kremlin's desire to destabilize the sovereignty of Ukraine, and establish some measure of Russian hegemony over the Sea of Azov and other disputed territorial areas.

.

I think it's apparent that Pootie just added another "card" to his arsenal.

All of Europe (except a few) says FU to America. I say Pootie is Europe's problem now. Let's see what the EU globalists do in response to his aggressive actions.

I agree with this post.

could be just that ( and thanks for the background for those who do not know)..but I find it odd that after building the bridge the is happens - why not before?
Trump and Putin meet at the upcoming G-20, I think these guys are candid with each other, so I'm going to wait an see what they say.

ya but you know we will get in it -we always do..
FFS we were a main reason the Euromaidan became the revolution, which was a proximate cause of the Crimea annexation...

The new Bridge now cements the West coast and East coast of the Strait to be 'Russian'. They have effectively served notice that the Kerch Strait is under Russian control. It may (or may not) continue to be an 'International Waterway'.

Like Crimea, is any Nation going to go to War with Russia over this? (Russia is begging Ukraine to go to open warfare ... just so it has an excuse to devour the whole of Ukraine)

QuizQuestion: Will Trump laugh this off like he did the premeditated murder of Khashoggi?

It is not very certain that the bridge will survive very long. The area is subject to deep-lying sludge volcanoes and sludgy bottom unsuitable for bridge foundations. If that wasn't bad enough there are icebergs in winter, the last bridge built in 1944 lasted just six months before the pressure of ice destroyed the bridge bearings.

My guess is the Bridge is more a political statement.
Will Havana Moon lead the charge (with his Englishmen) on Russia for this unprovoked attack?

It appears to be that the Ukes are challenging the entire notification procedure. Leave them to it . It's Russia's back-yard.

'The west ' has got enough problems trying to challenge the Chinese in China's back-yard. Yanqui- go home.
