I believe there are two sides to this. On one hand there's a definite element of truth to what you are saying and I thought the same thing myself. On the other side we can look at the '16 election for the alternative. Hillary was leading in the polls and many felt very good about her chances and then she's up losing a state like Wisconsin where she didn't even campaign and in hindsight many of her supporters say she dropped the ball by not going there. Point being you can still think you are going to win, even win big, but you can't take your foot off the gas and coast on the campaign trail. So that's why you 'attack' the VP candidate no matter who it is.
 
The trouble with Ms Harris, so my brother tells me, is that she is an ardent zionist. People of Indian descent have that fault - it's a reaction to the Muslims of Pakistan, I imagine.
