It is even worse than that, most defendants are of below normal intelligence and education, and have above average emotions, so are very easily be tricked.

Not entirely true. When someone is acting as their own lawyer, they retain the right to not personally testify while having the right to speak as an attorney.

And, you are correct. Most defendants are idiots and poorly educated. That's why they get manipulated by their pubic pretender into taking shitty plea deals and the like. Public defenders are often worse than having no attorney at all.
