japan hit by 8.9 quake

My brother's own coastal property right above Cresent City...

We also have friends right where the quake hit in Japan-no one has been able to reach them. We are praying that they are in a shleter somewhere-electricity was knocked-out and the temperatures are very cold right now.

A guy from work has a son stationed over there close to the nuclear power plant. Stars and Stripes say all are accounted for on the base, but they are still without power. Last he heard, it was 28 degrees there.

Just to put things into perspective, the Japanese earthquake was over 8000 times more powerful than the Christchurch one. The trouble is the Richter scale is logarithmic not linear so it can be very misleading.

The guy feared dead that the Coast Guard is looking for was out photographing the stupid tsunami.

He probably thought that he would make some money from the pics. I was in Thailand on Boxing day 2004 and those images are forever burned into my mind. Indeed I was staying on Patong beach in Phuket the Xmas before.

Are you suggesting that Japan was not aware that they had been hit by an earthquake and that a tsunami was highly possible??

no, their problem was getting the message out due to a broken infrastructure and they had less time to warn people - also, there was no warning of the quake at all

the fools that got swept away on the west coast were where they were warned against going...to get photos

This seems that you're trying to say that it's the Government of Japan's fault that 100+ died; because they had no way of letting the people know.

Predicting an earthquake is like the inquisition. No ever expects it; but your desire to try and tie it in to what was said, is odd.

I guess the same could be said for the 100+ people in Japan that are now dead. :palm:

That's just plain stupid, the people on the north east coast of Japan had a few minutes notice as the coast is only 150 miles from the epicentre, California is 6000 miles away. It happened at 5:45 am GMT and didn't reach California till 15:30 GMT.

the death toll may reach 1000

most of the japanese in the area hit by a large tsunami knew enough to head for high ground, some did not make it in time :(

the building codes in japan are tough, without them a lot more would have died

the tsunami struck the coast of japan within minutes of the earthquake
