James Mattis' warning to America

Guno צְבִי

We fight, We win, Am Yisrael Chai
Secretary of Defense James Mattis is stepping down at an extraordinarily fraught moment in American foreign policy. Coming in the wake of President Trump's surprise decision to withdraw troops from Syria, without having consulted allies and after barely talking to his own national security advisers, Secretary Mattis becomes the latest "adult in the room" to leave.

Mattis' letter is not a warning to President Trump, who, he knows after so many months of close experience, won't change. Mattis understands what this President is all about and that the notion of bringing him to normalcy is a fool's errand.
This letter is not written to him. It is written to other Republicans and conservative national security policymakers who have remained silent during the tumult of the first two years. It is a letter to people who understand the history and complexities of foreign policy, to suggest that the President is not in fact on the same page as many of them. It is a message to say, very clearly, that the United States faces a real risk right now from a President who governs off of his prejudices and impulses, and who is putting at risk some of the core principles that have successfully kept us at peace.

The men who have quit all regret their decision to serve the Trump administration. Yet, Trump thinks he's winning.

This is truly a telling moment in this drama that is the Trump administration.

At some point, Donald Trump has got to be stopped...and it is up to the Republicans to stop him...to rein him in.

I don't know what they are waiting for. Do they want a catastrophe to occur BEFORE taking action?

I do see more Republicans making the right noises...which is movement in the correct direction...but still no action.

Some Republican legislators have got to step up to the plate...and get this guy under control before he sends our nation, and perhaps the world, over a cliff.

Sorry for the cliches...but there almost no way to deal with this issue without using them.

Bye Bye Ms American Pie...

What's wrong with Trump throwing in America's towel? It's not like it took 100 year and all
our ancestors lives to build an empire and a rules based world order or something.

And on the anchor leg of the big race Trump hands the baton off to Putin.

Frankie, they were trying to ‘stop Trump’ before he was even elected lol.

And I didn’t realize how many perpetual war fans resided on the left. Learn something new every day, I suppose.

These are precisely the same people that cheered when Obama pulled the military out of Iraq, so massive hypocrisy is on display here. Having said that, Mattis is right and Trump is plain wrong.

I can guarantee you that there are posts from Trump boot-lickers on this forum in which they insist we should "trust" Trump, because he has the experienced hands of "the generals" guiding him (aka, Kelly, McMaster, and Mattis).

Well, the precious "generals" are gone, and we can conclude that Trump boot-lickers have a habit of indulging in cynicism and abject dishonesty, in the defense of their obese orange hero.

Trump has been saying he was going to get out of Syria.

If Mattis wasn’t aware of that or thought he could change Trump’s mind—that’s on Mattis. And btw, I thought everyone, but the neocons, wanted out of Syria.

What happened?

I can only hope that you do...you and the other American conservatives out there.

Obviously you guys need it.

Orderly my fucking arse, even a loony tune like you must know that's bollocks. Obama allowed ISIS to run amok and stood back watching it unfolding, you're seriously fucked in the head.

Are you upset we are pulling out of Syria or happy we are doing it but don't like how it's being done?

If Obama's execution was superior, how did ISIL suddenly take over most of Iraq?

the EZ thing to do is "maintain a presence" -but it accomplishes nothing
The mission was to kill ISIS, and it's all but done.

Let the Russians sort it out. not our problem

Let's review the Iraqi withdrawal for you RW dumbfucks.

In 2008 George W. Bush signed the U.S.–Iraq Status of Forces Agreement. It included a deadline of 31 December 2011, before which "all the United States Forces shall withdraw from all Iraqi territory". The last U.S. troops left Iraq on 18 December 2011, in accordance with this agreement.

I'll reiterate for you mentally challenged. Bush was given all the credit for that withdrawal. Remember, it was HIS deadline. But when things went to shit with ISIS, only then was it Obama's withdrawal.

You want hypocrisy, bitch? Look in the mirror.
