Is the Civil Rights movement what turned the South Republican for 50 years..

the republicans that the southerners voted for and that got into office as a result of those votes had not BEEN in office before. And if you think it is logical to assume that southern racists stop being racists upon the passage of a piece of legislation, you are even more stupid than I ever thought you could be.

Please. As if southerners are any more racist than northerners. Southerners are just more willing to discuss the subject openly than northerners.

Northerners will constantly "tsk tsk" on the subject... until you try busing black kids into their neighborhood schools.

Or worse, blacks move into white neighborhoods.

Go down south and it is commonplace to see blacks and whites living alongside each other peacefully. Not nearly as much as of the neighborhood segregation found all over the north.

????.....and has it not occurred to you that the southern racists DIDN'T stop being racist and kept on voting for the racist Democrats......while the southern democrats that were disgusted with the position the Democratic Party took on race left the party and started voting Republican instead?.........

The majority of the Southern Democrats pre Civil rights movement were racist. That's why the majorities were almost always in the Democrat camp. That majority left the Democratic party, and after that the republicans mostly got that majority.

They never left the Democrat Party. Please post a credible study that shows these Democrats left the party. Racists didn't join the Republican Party; they stayed within the Democrat Party.

So, overnight, the racist majority simply vanished, became progressives and started voting Republican? It was just co-incidence that it occurred at the same time as the Democrats supported desegregation?

not at all......the Jim Crow folks kept on voting for the racist Democrats, but....because there were fewer of them Republicans took office......then, after a while, blacks started putting forward candidates under the name of the Democratic Party (because of the disappearance of white Democrats) and they got elected to local office......eventually, the white liberals in New England noticed and started making plans to, in MM's words, "own the black vote".......

I knew many of my racist grandparents friends... They thought I was insane for voting Democrat in the 1990's. They had been Democrats but Johnson pushed them over to the Republicans.

no....the Democratic majority disappeared because a portion of voters stopped voting for the party of obvious racism....it did not happen when Democrats supported desegregation......it started because Democrats opposed desegregation....

It didn't occur at the same time. But you are welcome to try to make that claim and support it. Democrats were LESS likely to support it than Republicans. Democrats were also part and party to the KKK efforts to intimidate blacks, prevent them from voting and engage in Jim Crow laws up to 1965 when the Voting Rights legislation, also immensely popular among Republicans, were enacted.

First Republican Governor of Alabama was elected in 1993. Up until then, they were ALL Democrats.

First Republican Governor of Louisiana was elected in 1980. Up until then, they were ALL Democrats.

But I find the dimwitted premise fascinating; Republicans overwhelmingly supported the Civil Rights Act and Voters Right Act of 1965: THEREFORE, racists Democrats fed up with their party for their TEPID support of it went over to the party that embraced racial equality.
