I've been on these sites since Bill Clinton and have "known" many of these people through the interwebs for as long. Outside of message boards, there are PMs. I also suppose some could use the archaic Facebook and "friend" others. I think some have even met in person, though I haven't.

The only ones on here I am friends with are Mott and Christie, they are good people. I sent them postcards from Vietnam and Christie only just got hers after a month, Mott still hasn't!!

LOL....seriously, I do agree. Once again my knowlwedge of people here is from years of association with them on this [and other] board. But I feel that I know them very well politically and somewhat personally just the same.
