Interesting no threads here about the death of Prince

I don't think he gave them away but recieved royalties as the song writer.

Hell these days when a performer has a hit song that wins a Grammy he has four song writers, two producers, an arranger, and a dozen studio musicians and an engineer to help him.

No of course he never gave them away, however his worthless former crack-addict prostitute sister gets to inherit the lot including over 2000 unpublished songs.

Prince was one of a kind that has NEVER been run across before and maybe never will again. Terrific singer, songwriter, choreographer, guitarist, keyboardist, a virtuoso on practically all instruments, a phenomenal recording and sound engineer, stage manager and on and on and on. Most that deny him aren't worthy of a drop of his sweat on their thirstiest day.

And all those "skills" are completely useless. He was just a stupid entertainer, you moron. A farmer or plumber or mediocre engineer has ten times the social value of Prince. THINK, you miserable wretch.

Dude you are awesome. Just bitter at the world aren't you?

You would be an awesome contestant in the Chapelle Show "Hater of the Year" contest.

Well, those kinds of rankings are typically based on popularity as much as anything. I have no idea how one would rank 'best guitarists' since it's impossible to be objective about it. What impressed me about Prince wasn't his technical skills [at his level they're all pretty much off the charts, technically] so much as his ability to move around the stage without messing up a riff lol.

Now, if you break it down into categories it's a little easier: best rock/pop, best blues, jazz etc. Or maybe best innovator in each category. Hendrix was probably the best blues/rock innovator. As a hobbyist I can watch Clapton or Stevie Ray and see what they're doing---might not be able to get the same sound lol, but it makes sense from a technical aspect. Hendrix was different. It was more like organized chaos. Hendrix was doing things back in the 60's [!] that were pretty crazy by even today's standards.

Go back father before the advent of the electric guitar, Django Reinhardt was doing things that people still try to mimic many decades later. Both of their influences are everywhere.

Or you could go with best slide guitar innovator and Duane Allman wins that hands down. It's fun trying to rank them but I don't know that it really means anything since the guitar is an instrument that can produce such a broad range of sounds and music.

I agree with what you're saying here. Ultimately, it's very subjective. And there are so many great guitar players at this point. As you mention, when Hendrix came out, he was so far ahead of his time - he definitely gets big points for that. If he was just coming out today, it wouldn't be nearly as impactful, though he'd still be a great guitarist.

Like you said, it's probably better to look at it in terms of genre. I don't even know country that well, but some of those guys who are just in the backing bands are phenomenal.

I can't believe you guys would forget about Roy Clark. He's as good as any y'all listed.

Roy was/is good Flatts probably better.
Whoever brought up Reinhart good catch. He was a game changer.
Leo Kotke really good too. While Angus Young is not gifted technically, he has a knack for making it rock. Fripp is amazing Steve Marriott died too young to get much stature.
So many.

You are worthless; most anyone can perform your occupation. Prince was an elite musician, and made the millions because of that.

Nearly forgot Jeff Beck, that man is just brilliant.
