Interesting no threads here about the death of Prince

So C, you are clearly no fan if the purple potentate so who would be among your most favored?

For me I could include Robert Johnson Jimmy Page Steve Morse Steve Howe Chet Atkins and Segovia among others. Crap... forgot But Jansch!

No individuals, in particular. I'm more of the musical group, Southern Rock person. Allman Brothers, Marshall Tucker, Lynyrd Skynyrd, etc.

I also like Bluegrass.

I can't think of a single British popular musician who didn't ape American music, so who gives a toss what Tubby Tommy the slimy Limey says about superior American music?

BTW, I re-posted some of Tom's drivel on a Santana fan site and Carlos saw it.

The response was overwhelmingly negative.

His idol would be repulsed by almost everything he says.

Freudian slip?

Love bluegrass. Allman Bros awesome. Don't recall his name but I like 38Specials guitar player.

Man - what a bummer of an outlook to have in life.

If every entertainer in the country dropped dead right now, america would be just fine. How important can they be?

Now ask yourself what would happen if just 1/4 of our engineers or electricians or plumbers dropped dead. THINK

Quite a lot of engineers electricians etc would be out of work if the entertainment industry went poof.
America in particular owes a big bite of GDP to entertainment.

Prince was one of a kind that has NEVER been run across before and maybe never will again. Terrific singer, songwriter, choreographer, guitarist, keyboardist, a virtuoso on practically all instruments, a phenomenal recording and sound engineer, stage manager and on and on and on. Most that deny him aren't worthy of a drop of his sweat on their thirstiest day.

Just read an article from his drug dealer overy the years 84-08 who spoke of his debilitating stage fright which was the why behind it. This us not news, it's been long known he was unable to deal with as few as 5 people.
And it struck me how driven was he in pursuit of music that he had a 2-300 dollar a day dilaudid habit just to do it.
That is an opiate, many times stronger than heroine but in pill form that doesn't make you a zombie.
He wasn't getting stoned, he was coping. Pretty different than the usual junkie musician story.
Watch and see if his autopsy finds he died from tylenol.
What ?
He saw doctors for hip problems lately (getting old sucks folks) and they put him on perkoset. Another opiate only with tylenol. They wouldn't know about the dilaudid or his tolerance to the opiate and that he would overdose. And by doing so would put harmful amounts of tylenol in him.
Sad story.
I'm just not into pop so his music does nothing for me (MJ or practically any other pop acts) but I have to be impressed at what this guy did to pursue his craft.

Those RS guitar rankings always make me laugh. They're so concerned w/ being "hip." I remember that they had Kurt Cobain on one at #7, and Lindsey Buckingham wasn't even top 100.

Nothing against Cobain at all, but I think he would have been embarrassed about that. Any list that doesn't have Prince in the top 10 lacks credibility, imo.

Well, those kinds of rankings are typically based on popularity as much as anything. I have no idea how one would rank 'best guitarists' since it's impossible to be objective about it. What impressed me about Prince wasn't his technical skills [at his level they're all pretty much off the charts, technically] so much as his ability to move around the stage without messing up a riff lol.

Now, if you break it down into categories it's a little easier: best rock/pop, best blues, jazz etc. Or maybe best innovator in each category. Hendrix was probably the best blues/rock innovator. As a hobbyist I can watch Clapton or Stevie Ray and see what they're doing---might not be able to get the same sound lol, but it makes sense from a technical aspect. Hendrix was different. It was more like organized chaos. Hendrix was doing things back in the 60's [!] that were pretty crazy by even today's standards.

Go back father before the advent of the electric guitar, Django Reinhardt was doing things that people still try to mimic many decades later. Both of their influences are everywhere.

Or you could go with best slide guitar innovator and Duane Allman wins that hands down. It's fun trying to rank them but I don't know that it really means anything since the guitar is an instrument that can produce such a broad range of sounds and music.

It is a amazing how many songs he wrote for other people, I knew about Sinead O'Connor but that's about it. Yes, Mott I know you know!!

[h=1]'Prince is famous for ghostwriting': 14 songs you didn't know Prince penned and gave away to other artists[/h]
I don't think he gave them away but recieved royalties as the song writer.

Hell these days when a performer has a hit song that wins a Grammy he has four song writers, two producers, an arranger, and a dozen studio musicians and an engineer to help him.

You mean acetaminophen. Tylenol is a trade name.
