No, they do not. But desh stated that poverty meant starving babies. It does not mean that. Because poverty here is not at the point where we have kids starving to death. That doesn't mean we shouldn't help, but it does mean the hyperbole she used is false.

Saying they are going without 'enough' food is also vague. What is 'enough'? Do we provide the basics for survival? Or because we are wealthy do we provide more? How much more? That is similar to desh's nonsense that minimum wage should be paid by corporations at a level that is enough to 'survive' on. It is a vague term. We are all going to define survival in a different manner. Add in the fact that stats show the vast majority of those on minimum wage are in service industries where they are often supplemented by tips. The 'restaurants' (using that loosely) that they don't are usually the McDonalds of the world... and those are predominantly teens/college kids. Do they need to earn enough from minimum wage to rent a place, pay for their cars etc...???

Yes, people are getting positively rich on tips at your local Appleby's! I see more and more adults working low wage jobs, usually the elderly, which is why teenagers are having trouble finding jobs.

That said, poverty is (as I told you before) a relative term. If I were on an island with multi-millionaires, my lifestyle would seem impoverished relative to them. Likewise, our 'poor' would not be considered 'poor' if compared to the people of Belize. But here they are. Unless you have a country where everything is divided equally and constantly redistributed to maintain that level of equality, then you are going to have those that are considered 'rich' and those that are 'poor'. That is indeed inevitable. Which is why we try to raise the standard of living for everyone.

When you look at the war on poverty... we still have a similar 'poverty' rate that we did 40 years ago. Yet the standard of living for our poor is far higher than it used to be. Why is that Desh?

There is nothing wrong with safety nets or helping the poor... but you are pretending the minimum wage is the key to this. It is not.
