In Less Than a Week, Biden Was Able to Stop a New Arms Race

The new deal has not been made yet, so how would you know? Biden's success is keeping the old deal. Now we can move on to the new deal.

trump was never able to make any progress on the new deal, and was willing to let the old deal collapse.

We did not need to talk Russia into an extension is the first thing:
Russian officials on Friday welcomed news that President Joe Biden’s administration was set to approach their country in the hope of renewing dialogue over the last remaining U.S.-Russia nuclear treaty.

NBC News on Thursday obtained an internal State Department memo that said the U.S. will propose that the landmark New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, or New START, which expires on Feb. 5, be extended for five years.

"Russia without doubt supports preservation and extension of the START treaty in order to get a certain time lag to carry out all the necessary negotiations and contacts," Dmitry Peskov, press secretary to Russian President Vladimir Putin, said during a daily call with reporters.

Peskov added that while he welcomes "political will to extend the document," he still has not received the U.S. proposal.

And for a second thing:
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov has stated that any possible replacement of the New START treaty with a new pact would be impossible without a discussion concerning US missile defense.

“If the US is not ready to move on [this] then there are little chances of having a new deal to replace the New START, we should focus on the missile defense problem. Otherwise, arms control will be in question”, Ryabkov said at a press conference on Thursday.

The last nuclear arms control treaty, New START, was set to expire on February 5th. Putin was fine with that, he wants to put Russian to work making nuclear weapons. America has no interest in spending hundreds of billions a year on new nuclear weapons, and Putin knows this. The only problem is he does not want to be seen as the cause of the new arms race.

trump had four years to come up with a new deal that would be so much better than the old deal. The problem was trump is not good at working on things, and Putin had no interest in any deal. For four years, trump ranted like a lunatic, while the world laughed at him.

Biden came to office, and made a firm statement that we would get a 5 year extension on New START, and then start working on better deals. Putin tried to weasel it down to 1 year, but Biden stood firm. In 6 days, Putin gave in. We now have time to improve New START.

The days of US - Soviet (aka Russian) nuclear arms races is long gone in the past. Neither side is pushing to build vast new stockpiles of nuclear weapons of any sort as neither has any particular need for them. START is a relative waste of time compared to the crisis that is China and their expansionist, and increasingly militant, actions in Asia. China is bent on domination of the entire South China Sea and even closing it off to international marine traffic. That is a huge thing and Biden's all but ignoring it because he's bought and paid for by the CCP.

The new deal has not been made yet, so how would you know?

a 5 year extension? past his term in Office? it's the same old bad deal !

Trump was trying to bring in China -China wants no part of nuclear treaty.
Since this treaty was bad and China wasn't going to join any new treaty, Trump pulled the plug

^ nice find HAWKEYE.. an extension for 5 years is Biden punting and keeping the same
If we had some talks scheduled it might be OK but we dont. it's just more Biden dithering

Then Putin must see good in it for him too. Biden does not scare anyone.

First, the old deal is not bad. We gain nothing by allowing the old deal to expire. By keeping the old deal for the maximum 5 years, we do not allow it to interfere with a new deal. It is the best anyone could get in under a week.

Trump was trying...

No, he literally was not trying. trump is too lazy to try. he was "wanting", but any child can want. he lacks the ability to try.

For The Thread:

The U.S. doesn’t have any wiggle room in the effort to upgrade its nuclear capability: modernization must be done now, without interruption, or the U.S. stands to lose its deterrence edge, the undersecretary of defense for acquisition and sustainment told the Senate Armed Services Committee yesterday.

The Russians and the Chinese are doing a fine job of upgrading their own nuclear capability and developing new delivery tools as well, Ellen M. Lord said. The U.S. is doing the same.

But, she said, “We are living now with Cold War technology. We have put off modernizing the triad for multiple decades. So now we have no margin. We need to move forward. So, any cut in funding would essentially have us unilaterally stand down in terms of our capability to have a credible nuclear deterrent.”

Cue another five year delay.

The Empire is going to bury us.

by keeping AN EXTENSION there is NO REASON to CHANGE THE DEAL NOW.
In effect Biden locks us in for 5 years of a crappy deal

so stoopid TDS.
China is not in START -getting some arms control is paramount.

Trump needed to get re-elected to do it, just like the trade agreements with China for add leverage
Biden isnt doing ANYTHING with China for arms control or trade

America needs that deal not to change. We need another deal, not get rid of the old deal that works for us. Having to negotiate two deals at once is senseless, because we are starting from a point of having already given Putin what he wants.

If Putin wants to undo the old deal, he will have to give us something.

Trump needed to get re-elected to do it

The common thing we saw in all of trump's international phone calls was that he tended to scream nonsensically that he needed bribes. Almost everyone thought he was insane. he had four years to try to get a deal with China, and failed to even start. he ended up ranting about how he needed help getting reelected.

The Chinese actually hung up the phone on him a couple of times.

WTF is 2 deals?
You tell Russia they have to comply or there is not going to be negotiations.
Send Blinken over -make himself useful instead of dicking around with the Iran deal

I JUST LINKED all the problems with the New Start. The BIG ONE is tactical nukes.
those are low level yield to be used in a battle theater.
Russia can blackmail us by threatening a tactical nuke strike, and we would back off.
It's not Armageddon , but it would be something like Chernobyl today. a ghost town

Do you see why a bad deal is worse then no deal? It leaves us frozen if they threaten a tac nuke.
If Russia wants to negotiate then it has to be on new terms ( and this isnt the only issue)

I'd rather the Chinese hang up then spend 2 hours of reminiscing of good times like Biden just did with Xi

you fail to grasp Trump signed phase 1 with China

YOU FUCKING IDIOT. RUSSIA HAS VIOLATED THAT PILE OF NONSENSE SINCE ITS INCEPTION, WHICH IS WHY WE GOT OUT OF IT.

IN LESS THAN A WEEK, BIDEN BENT OVER FOR PUTIN.....AGAIN.

WHY ARE LEFTIDIOTS CLUELESS ABIOUT EVERYTHING???

Russian Violations of the INF and New START Treaties

Trump had his warts and weaknesses but being played for a stooge by foreign leaders wasn’t one of them. Russia, China and Iran can’t be trusted to honor treaties because they are led by liars. It always ends up with the US playing the stooge by holding our end up while the bad guys cheat.

why are you so fucking stupid? so signing a nuclear arms deal with the main nuclear threat to us on the planet is actually MORE DANGEROUS THAN NOT? when both of us have enough nukes and missiles and whatnot to destroy each other thousands of times over? do you get paid to be a stupid clown?

if you want to puke due to a president kissing the shit out of Xi's ass, then have somebody read this to you, when trump bent over for him so often, before he decided to try to use him as a scapegoat for how he totally fucked our response to Covid.

New START: The U.S. Should Not Extend the Dangerously Flawed Treaty for Five More Years
https://www.heritage.org/defense/re...the-dangerously-flawed-treaty-five-more-years
Continue efforts to engage Russia in nuclear discussions. The Administration has reached out to Russia to begin a nuclear dialogue, and it should continue this effort by immediately appointing a senior envoy for negotiations. The Administration must discuss the inclusion of Russia’s new nuclear-capable systems and tactical warheads into any extended agreement, as well as fixing the counting and verification problems in New START. While a solution within the next 11 months is unlikely, attempting dialogue with Russia will give the Administration the ability to convey its concerns with the current New START framework and reveal Russia’s provocative behavior.

Allow New START to expire in February 2021, absent concrete progress in negotiations. The treaty is flawed, outdated, and does not provide the United States with useful constraints on Russian capabilities. If U.S. and Russian diplomats have made concrete progress on negotiating an improved agreement before the expiration date, a short extension might be justified in order for negotiations to be finalized—but even then, the Administration should not extend the Treaty for five years.

Fund modernization of the U.S. nuclear enterprise to field new systems as quickly as possible. Proponents in Congress must continue to ensure that the Administration’s request for modernization programs receives full funding. The Department of Defense should request funding for the SLCM-N as a program of record in fiscal year 2022 to bring on this new capability as quickly as possible.23

Substantial progress on these programs will eventually help to compel Russia back to the negotiating table.

Lay the groundwork to commence arms control discussions with China. Even though China currently has a limited stockpile of about 300 warheads, it continues to advance its stockpile and nuclear triad. The Administration should continue reaching out to China to pursue even minor confidence-building measures for nuclear verification and transparency. The Administration should push its allies to do the same. It should also look to field capabilities that might compel China to the negotiating table, such as ground-launched cruise missiles deployed to the Pacific.

Arms control agreements do not have intrinsic merit; the United States should always reject agreements that do not serve U.S. national security interests. While the future of arms control remains unknown, it is important for the United States to begin laying the groundwork now to eventually compel both Russia and China to the negotiating table to agree on genuine arms control that serves U.S. security interests, enhances stability, and prevents U.S. adversaries from realizing their hegemonic ambitions.

Hello T. A. Gardner,

Biden has no ties to China. Absurd imaginary false made-up nonsense.

There is zero evidence of that.

Just more lies from loser Trump.

Putting arms to one side: USA and the Dems will certainly get Communism. Good luck. Biden will destroy the USA.
