In Bush v. Gore the bush campaign asked the SC justices to review a decision of the FL Supreme Court ordering a statewide manual recount of 'undervotes'...those ballots indicating that the voter may have intended to cast a vote for president but where the machine tabulation had registered no vote. SCOTUS issued three rulings with respect to this challenge.
1. 12/9/2000 Stayed FL Supreme Court's order, thereby halting recount that was underway.
2. 12/12/2000 Ruled that the FL Supreme Court's recount order violated the Constitution's equal protection clause because it didn't specify uniform rules for what would be a legal vote for president...whether every FL county had to count a 'hanging chad' or 'dimpled chad' or some other indication of voter intent in a particular way.
3. Stopped the FL election process instead of remanding the case to the FL Supreme Court for it to cure the equal protection violation by establishing consistent vote counting standards
The net result was to insure that SCOTUS and SCOTUS alone would decide the 2000 presidential election. If the Court had never intervened or if it had returned the case to FL to correct the perceived equal protection violation, the 2000 election would have been decided by a political process.
Maybe the recount would have produced a clear winner; maybe the process would have produced competing bush and Gore electoral slates from FL. In that event the dispute would have been decided in Congress, exactly as provided under the Constitution and the federal law enacted in 1887 after the disputed Hayes/Tilden presidential election. But the Court, or at least five members of it, did not want to risk having a decision of this magnitude made in the messy cauldron of politics. They stopped the recount once and for all and called the election themselves.

Registration errors and voter fraud are two different issues. Try to learn the difference.
