Circumstances are somewhat similar, imo. Biden is not popular - and just like the '70s, inflation is still a big problem.
The polls consistently show Haley doing better against Biden than Trump against Biden. In the ones I've seen, Trump is up by a point or 2. Haley is up by 4 or 5.
Trump would only win a base election. At minimum, Haley would attract a lot of independents. And I think some Democrats too. As I said in the OP - if the GOP wants the WH back, Haley is a no brainer.
I think there's no question Haley can beat Biden in an election. But I also think it would be close and she's not going to win traditional blue states (California, Oregon, Washington, New York, Connecticut etc.) So that's where I'm coming from when speaking about her (not) flipping Democratic voters.
But those college educated suburban white women that traditionally leaned Republican but came out big for Biden in 2020? She could definitely bring some of them back into the Republican fold which I think is the point you are making.
