Setting an arbitrary automatic spending increase at a lower level is not a "cut".
And republicans will compromise on the taxes, as long as you compromise on simplifying the tax code itself. More revenue even at a lower rate because there will be less deductions is good.
We need a national drive to get off foreign energy so we don't waste our treasure and lives in the Middle East. Not an ideologue presenting ideas that have not reached the level of implementation as a "solution"...
You have some valid points; however, republicans need to be told they cannot touch, privatize, molest, change, cut, or in ANY way, shape or form, touch Social Security, Medicare, Medicade, Welfare, Unemployment, and necessary services. FDR created these in the "New Deal" to fix the depression that was brought on mostly by out of control robbber baron swine who paid off republicans to get their way.
I do think compromise is needed. We need to make some cuts... starting with congressional salaries, and other uneeded lifetime benefits for Congressman, Senators, Presidents, and various other political figures. There is money to be reclaimed here.
We can compromise on some of the services, but right now, the economy being what it is, the orifice from which the government poors out services is so tight that if it passed gas only dogs would be able to hear it.
Also ... I would think some compromise elsewhere could be workable. I think "At-will" employment is a tool of abuse that business has exploited for far to long. It needs to be outlawed or their need to be restrictions on its use on the employer side.
The EPA needs to be left alone. It keeps corporate polluters in check. I am willing to compromise here too... I have no issue with allowing companies to drill for oil wherever it lies, provided the environment isn't permanantly damaged and provided that the equipment is top of the line. I do not want to see another gulf coast disaster because some corporate assclown decides to cut corners.
