I had a little combo in the '60's in Memphis (my Navy days) and we played in some of those bars....just as Howey describes and with a dirt floor, puddles and all.....
Aaaaahhhhhh....life is good.....from there to the Memphis Bell riverboat, a few gigs at the local USO, enlisted men's club, and Acey Duecy Club ....
those were the days.....

so the systematic racial oppression in our country is basically a mixed bag of blame. the random outliers of .00000001 of african americans that owned slaves is exactly equal to what the whites did. lmao

You play? What instrument? Genre? Just curious...I'm an acoustic roots music guy. Blues, folk, bluegrass, etc. I play rhythm guitar, mandolin and sing..my buddy playa lead, banjo and some vocals... but basically spells me about every 3-4 songs.

Love to meet fellow musicians.

Actually a very small percentage of whites owned slaves. But apparently you have been brainwashed with white guilt to look at things objectively

Slavery has been a part of human existence for ages and still exists today. It is not unique to whites or the negro. You white liberals act as if the negro was the only slave in all of human history.

Now this is where your dumb ass says I am defending slavery. I am not. But if I were to own a slave it would be your simple minded ass. I wouldn't mind taking the whip to you and making you pick some cotton

They were the only slaves in this country....which is what we're talking about.

I love it...when true defenders of Freedom of religion call people like you out on the crusades or even the virtual extermination of Native Americans as examples of Christian Terrorism... you say "that was a long time ago"...but you are willing to go back even further to defend the concept of slavery.

There are many misconceptions as to what caused and fueled the American Civil War. Slavery was indeed one of them. However, less than 20% of the Southern population owned African Americans. It was a major investment to own an African American especially if they possessed valuable skills such as blacksmithing, carpentry, or farming skills. Certainly owning a black man or woman, was a prestigious classification, but very few Southerners and even Northerners, fit in this category of wealth. Thus, the stories that have been perpetuated throughout history of all slave owners beating their "slaves" is quite inaccurate. It is a myth that the media of that time stimulated to build a case to send the North and South to war. In addition, politicians, many of them wealthy and slave-owners, were used as the example or model for the Southern population, when in fact the average Southerner lived day to day and could not afford to purchase another human being for $500-$1,500 .
In addition, while many people have been taught that Southerners were the only ones who did not like African Americans in the United States, Northern sentiment was equally if not more harsh toward African Americans. Blacks were beaten and even killed in city streets of New York City, New York, 9toward dissolvement in the mid to late 1800's, but it was the American Civil War which sped up the abolition
It depends heavily on the region. South Carolina had the largest percentage of the population in slavery, and areas of the coastal plain, which are areas within about 100-200 miles inland, were flat, fertile, sunny, and had the subtropical climate that cotton and tobacco thrive in. Those two crops, especially cotton, were cash crops. They are not food, and therefore cotton and tobacco farms were based on money rather than subsistence. Combined with the labor intensity of cotton and tobacco, farms growing them usually had slaves. Areas in the mountains, as well as wooded, undeveloped areas, on the other hand, had few, if any, slaves. The percentage of Slave owners ranges from about a third of the white population in states like South Carolina and Mississippi, to single digits in more mountainous states.
 
only 20% of the population owned people, no big deal.

if anyone in the south didn't own people, it was because they were poor, not for moral reasons.
