I agree with Charlie, speaking freely should invite dialogue, and the campuses are exactly the place that critical thinking should be taught. You cannot teach critical thinking in "safe spaces". Look. I am not a Christian. I have never been shy telling folks here that fact. I have no belief that gay people are "sinners", do not care if they get married, and support gay people in nearly every way. Charlie thought they were sinners, because that is what his religion taught him. This is exactly what is wrong today. So speaking freely and civil debate is risky and could lead to an assassination. How fucking dumb have we become as a society/
Wise words from Orwell:
“The further a society drifts from the truth, the more it will hate those who speak it.”
If I were there, I would use the mic, tell him my thoughts and underline the first amendment isn't just about speech and I get to believe differently, laws should not be based on his religion alone, and he would provide me with his thoughts on the matter.
This idea that anyone "deserves" my wrath because of disagreement flies in the face of this board... I let people disagree, even to the point that they are clearly ideologues and will never learn. Because I believe they have a right to be jerks and we have no right to be protected from their thoughts.
