House GOP Plays Ben Affleck Movie Clip To Rally Caucus

The House GOP leadership team, often described as fractious, showed complete unity behind closed doors and in public Tuesday. House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) told Republicans he was “150 percent” behind Boehner and his plan, according to Republicans who attended Tuesday morning’s closed-door meeting. He told Republicans to “stop grumbling and whining and to come together as conservatives” to support the Boehner proposal.

House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), the party’s vote counter, began his talk by showing a clip from the movie, “The Town”, trying to forge a sense of unity among the independent-minded caucus.

Very understood that they have never tried to hurt people. Libs have supposedly been the champion for the little man for years. Sadly, the programs designed to help them has left them dependent on the government like a tick, and once the host is out of blood (which it soon will be), the tick will have to feed off of something else or die. There is an old African proverb that goes something like, "Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day; teach a man to fish and he'll eat for a lifetime." The Dems are the party that started the Food Stamp program, the public housing program, the welfare program, and others. Repubs have constantly tried to step in and provide relief in the way of job programs, enterprise zones in poverty-stricken areas, and tax cuts for all, including the poor. Dems have tried to play Robin Hood, but have made it Robbin the Hood, as they give the poor money through all these programs but, as Bill Clinton and others did, raised taxes on the middle class and poor to pay for these programs. They may not have intentionally set out to hurt people, but they have created a system of dependency on the government for the basics, a dependency that will lead to more poverty. Plus, once the Dems idea of amnesty goes through, you will have a flood of folks jumping the border. Do we have the money to pay for these people? You know as well as I do that we can't meet our bills now. And the Dems want amnesty?!? Hurt may not have been the intent, but it is the extent of things now.

I disagree. Look at the sordid history of the Democrat Party: Slavery, segregationists, the KKK. After losing the legislative battle for civil rights the strategy against the black man changed. Now they've given us Affirmative Action Forever, the belittlement of traditional marriage and the stable family, handouts and housing to make fatherhood unnecessary- all the while accusing Republicans and conservatives of being racists, homophobes, sexists, loving the rich and hating the poor. Combined these policies have been wildly successful at destroying black families and keeping so many of them undereducated and poor.

Very true. That's what I'm getting at. They have for so many years touted themselves as the champion of the poor, the minority, they downtrodden, but their policies have done nothing but put salt in the wound. They have touted gay rights at the expense of the moral fiber of this nation, have touted free speech for all at the expense of our morals and values, give money like it's going out of style but want to tax everyone to death (and in death), and, while they say the Repubs love the rich people, the rich is all the Dems pander to for their campaign funds. I was raised in a middle class Democrat home. I wised up when I went to college, and I see why my family was stuck where it was. My grandmother worked her butt off, but my mom was dependent on the government for nearly everything (I remember government cheese lol). I wised up and got several degrees, spent some time in the US Army as an artillery officer, and now work my butt off to feed my family. The degrees help, but one must make a difference on his or her own, not by allowing the government to foot their bills. The Dems have put an entitlement attitude into the minds of so many people; they've created a monster, one I don't see going away for some time.

Here are some FACTS to dent your dogma and ignorance...

That is quite a noble rant. It is one of the better self centered justifications I've heard, but here's the problem. I don't believe a word of it and here's why; your fairy tale requires other people to play along and conform to a role you supply for them. There's always the 'able bodied but lazy poor person', the 'bleeding heart' but empty headed 'liberal' who just wants to hand out other people's money and of course, the clear headed 'conservative' whose 'tough love' always saves the day. Well, I refuse to play along. If you had the intelligence and curiosity to find out what the 'War on Poverty' was about and what it wasn't about, it would save you from all the bloviation that comes out of your ass. But it's a lot easier for you to define it under YOUR self righteous terms so you don't have to care. It is also predictable that you chose 'welfare', because that fits so neatly into your 'dependency' and 'entitlement' dismissal of others. There are reasons for and realities to poverty, you have focused on the least of them.

When JFK's brother-in law Sargent Shriver accepted LBJ's challenge and took on the 'War on Poverty' the first thing he discovered was rather startling and disturbing. Half of the Americans living in poverty were children. Another large segment were elderly and another segment were mentally and/or physically disabled. So a HUGE segment of the poor fit the TRUE definition of a dependent. So there is an obligation as a civil society to make sure those real dependents are not trampled on or extinguished.

To address some of the players in your fairy tale, voila! We have an unabashed flaming liberal...Sargent Shriver. But I hate to disappoint you. Sargent Shriver hated welfare and had no intention of creating a handout program. He didn't believe in handouts, he believed in community action. The 'War on Poverty' was called the Office of Economic Opportunity. The core principles were opportunity, responsibility, community and empowerment. The program strove for maximum feasible participation. One of the concepts of empowerment was poor people had a right to one-third of the seats on every local poverty program board. It was a community based program that focused on education as the keys to the city. Programs such as VISTA, Job Corps, Community Action Program, and Head Start were created to increase opportunity for the poor so they could pull themselves out of poverty with a hand UP, not a hand out. Even when Johnson effectively pulled the plug on the War on Poverty to fund the war in Vietnam, Shriver fought on and won. During the Shriver years more Americans got out of poverty than during any similar time in our history. (The Clinton years - employing the same philosophy - were the second best.)
