The Society of Actuaries is estimating that the cost of individual plans on exchanges will rise more than 80% in some states in 2014. Surprised? Yeah, me neither.
The Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP!) last week discussed a study published in March by the Society of Actuaries (SOA) predicting that medical claims per member will rise 32 percent in the individual plans expected to dominate the Obamacare exchanges next year.
The SOA report said that in some states, the cost of the plans will rise as much as 80 percent. (Don’t worry. Many of the plans’ prices will be subsidized by taxpayers.)
The reason for the increase (besides that the entire program is an unwieldy clusterschtupp)? Elderly and sick people will join the exchanges at much higher rates than younger, healthier people who would rather pay the penalty than buy insurance. Maybe President Obama needs to hit the perpetual campaign trail again to tell them how awesome it is?
Nevertheless, Senator Al Franken, the Saturday Night Alive alum, is acting astounded – astounded, I tell you! – that medical costs and plan prices are soaring.
“Most actuaries in this country — what percentage are employed by insurance companies?” Franken asked an actuary last week at a hearing of the HELP committee.
One of the hallmarks of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was that it would lead to lower costs. But the act doesn’t “protect” patients and is neither affordable” nor does it provide “care.”

So this great wonderful program that was going to make health care available to more Americans, and lower the cost of health care, is going to do neither. Instead, individuals who get insurance through a non-employer-subsidized plan, will be paying 80% higher rates, and those rates were already the highest. Not only that, but now it's the law of the land you have to purchase this, whether you want it or not.
This is the reality of what we got when Democrats promised us more affordable and available health care.
