Happy Birthday

In a civilised society the criminals don't just attack people for the sake of it. If someone attacks you you have probably done something to deserve it. So, don't get on people's tits. It's cheaper than buying a gun and much safer.

this is why the world thinks you're a blooming idiot. There is absolutely no civilized society if it still has criminals.

Midcan has officially been replaced.

Politeness is defined different ways in different countries. Our society is armed to the teeth and we've gotten no blue ribbons for courtesy.

I don't own a gun or ever had a reason to need one for self defense, and most of the people I know are the same. We don't live in one of the Top 25 safest cities, either.

an armed society is a polite society. this country could cut the violence in half if they would carry a means of defending themselves. MOST crime victims are victims because they refuse to protect themselves.

lets get at least one thing right when we make blanket statements. Our SOCIETY isn't armed to the teeth, out CRIMINAL society is armed to the teeth. The good and decent law abiding people usually get denied their right to be armed and protect themselves or they are constantly ridiculed by those who think they shouldn't be.

Let it go, Damo.
It appears that there are those that only care about dismissing all this.

The amusing part is going to be when it gets large enough that they can't ignore it; but then, they'll probably just try to dismiss it again.

Like you did with the antiwar protests?

When you have the kind of numbers that can effect an election then it wont matter what I say huh?

My point is you do not.

Telling me it will grow is just wishes on your part.

The reality is it was a samll turnout for having been promoted for 24/7 on a news network.

This was all you got to show.

Next come July 4th when the organizers will have you blend into celebrations to make your numbers look bigger.

That is why they picked the date.

They dont give a damn that its the ONE DAY Americans have to truely come together in a non partisan way and celebrate our love of country.

They want to politicize it too.

Since the easiest person to change is ourselves how does one contribute to a non-partisan environment? Is it with a lot of "us" vs. "them" Democrat vs. Republican rhetoric? Is it when we consistently say "you caused this" or "your team caused this or that" type of talk which implies specific divisions not unity?

There are many issues reasonable people can disagree on. And except for maybe God & Pete Carroll no one is right 100% of the time. How do you propose overcoming to unite?

So what did Tibet do that forced China to invade it??

Or is it just that China is uncivilized??

Yes, let's clarify. Several reports came out a few years ago with these numbers. If nine out of ten citizens own one or more guns, I call that armed to the teeth. However, I'll be happy to look at any report you cite that gives different numbers.

GENEVA (Reuters) - The United States has 90 guns for every 100 citizens, making it the most heavily armed society in the world, a report released on Tuesday said.

U.S. citizens own 270 million of the world's 875 million known firearms, according to the Small Arms Survey 2007 by the Geneva-based Graduate Institute of International Studies.

About 4.5 million of the 8 million new guns manufactured worldwide each year are purchased in the United States, it said.

"There is roughly one firearm for every seven people worldwide. Without the United States, though, this drops to about one firearm per 10 people," it said.

You're interpreting those numbers in exactly the way that media report intended......falsely. Do you truly think that 9 out of 10 American citizens own a gun? That would mean that 270 million people own a single gun.....a single gun.

Now we know that just isn't true considering that Chicago pretty much outlaws gun ownership unless very strict requirements are met. That's 3 million people.
New York City requires purchase permits and possession licenses, which aren't handed out unless you're rich, famous, or politically connected. That's 8 million people.
Washington DC JUST started issuing licenses to own in the home. That's only half a million though.

Now, if you want to look at things realistically, take what you know about the people around you and correlate that to the general population. I know both gun owners and non gun owners. it's about a 30/70 mix, with 30 being the gun owner side. They own multiple guns.

At last report, there were around 80 million gun owners in the US. Thats about 37% of the population. Thats probably gone up a bit with the rise in gun sales since the election of Obama. I'd estimate that maybe close to 85 million now. thats recognized lawful gun owners and NOT unlawful gun owners and there's really no way to realistically account for how many that may be.

Now, there may be alot of guns in America, but that is not the cause of your high crime rate no matter how much you wish it to be. The main direct and irrefutable reason for the high crime rates in this country is due specifically to municipalities making gun ownership so difficult that people just don't bother with it, or they make it outright illegal anyway. This gives a HUGE advantage to criminals who were never going to abide by the gun laws anyway, so what you're left with is a majority of the populace who are denied the most effective means of protection there is and keeps them from being on equal footing with human predators.

Now you have a point. The worst part about that is, there never will be. In ANY society, you will ALWAYS have some who prey on those weaker than them.

It is, surely, a matter of degree.
Yes there are those who prey on weaker members of society and here is no exception. However it differs here in one important respect. We rarely see gratuitous violence. The pragmatic Chinese crook will ignore a few bucks on the street but will turn over a gold shop. The logic is that if he's caught he's going down, so go down with something worthwhile.
Assaults are usually pay-backs gang on gang and the public has very little to fear.
So people here do not seek to be armed, do not live their lives in fear, tend not to confront problems but find ways to work round them. They often find it strange that westerners seem to be out looking for trouble when there is no pecunary advantage to be had.
So when you use terms like 'there is no such thing as ....' and 'everyone does this or that' it would be as well to remember that your sphere of reference is somewhat limited.
