Yes, let's clarify. Several reports came out a few years ago with these numbers. If nine out of ten citizens own one or more guns, I call that armed to the teeth. However, I'll be happy to look at any report you cite that gives different numbers.
GENEVA (Reuters) - The United States has 90 guns for every 100 citizens, making it the most heavily armed society in the world, a report released on Tuesday said.
U.S. citizens own 270 million of the world's 875 million known firearms, according to the Small Arms Survey 2007 by the Geneva-based Graduate Institute of International Studies.
About 4.5 million of the 8 million new guns manufactured worldwide each year are purchased in the United States, it said.
"There is roughly one firearm for every seven people worldwide. Without the United States, though, this drops to about one firearm per 10 people," it said.
You're interpreting those numbers in exactly the way that media report intended......falsely. Do you truly think that 9 out of 10 American citizens own a gun? That would mean that 270 million people own a single gun.....a single gun.
Now we know that just isn't true considering that Chicago pretty much outlaws gun ownership unless very strict requirements are met. That's 3 million people.
New York City requires purchase permits and possession licenses, which aren't handed out unless you're rich, famous, or politically connected. That's 8 million people.
Washington DC JUST started issuing licenses to own in the home. That's only half a million though.
Now, if you want to look at things realistically, take what you know about the people around you and correlate that to the general population. I know both gun owners and non gun owners. it's about a 30/70 mix, with 30 being the gun owner side. They own multiple guns.
At last report, there were around 80 million gun owners in the US. Thats about 37% of the population. Thats probably gone up a bit with the rise in gun sales since the election of Obama. I'd estimate that maybe close to 85 million now. thats recognized lawful gun owners and NOT unlawful gun owners and there's really no way to realistically account for how many that may be.
Now, there may be alot of guns in America, but that is not the cause of your high crime rate no matter how much you wish it to be. The main direct and irrefutable reason for the high crime rates in this country is due specifically to municipalities making gun ownership so difficult that people just don't bother with it, or they make it outright illegal anyway. This gives a HUGE advantage to criminals who were never going to abide by the gun laws anyway, so what you're left with is a majority of the populace who are denied the most effective means of protection there is and keeps them from being on equal footing with human predators.
