IMO, a lot of it is self-induced from the actions the GOP took following the end of the Cold War. Part of that can also be connected to Reagan's cutting a deal with the Jerry Falwell's Christian Right and the Evagelistas, but it was the end of the Cold War which had them change course away from the economy and national defense over to opposing gay marriage and banning abortion. The tiny minority of white supremacist groups also started to grow a bit in the mid to late 90s. They died down after 9/11 but resurged under Obama. All of these factors combined to allow a pedophile billionaire to not only become President but allowed to commit treason by the Republican Party itself. Reagan must be rolling in his grave over what the GOP became.
Now we have the American equivalent of Sturmabteilung who have committed several acts of violence in Trump's name, but promise to do more.
