This guy pointed a gun at the cops and fired. The cop could then fire center mass (into his chest) and unload I'd guess up to 6 rounds in quick succession.
The defense for that in court is the cop was trained to shoot "center mass" (at the target's chest) and that he fired two three-round bursts to "stop the action" as trained.
Having ripped the perp's heart and lungs out in the process is just too bad.
