I would love to see how long the US government would have tolerated an ersatz army, about ten minutes I would say. They would all have been executed a long time ago, you only have to look to Kent State to see what would have happened.

And I'd love to see what the British would resort to if an alien power forcefully swept into their land, denied them their civil rights, imposed an alien religion, and treated them as captives in their own country.

With the British hopelessly outgunned within their own borders, what would they do differently?

I doubt the British Government did other than scream at this development. It could be that it is a political act, but I'd guess that it is more a matter of chickens coming home to roost, the cops being pushed by the evidence and the relatives of the murdered people. THere are occasions when you make sense, this being one of them. It won't happen of course because the IRA are too bloody arrogant to submit to a T&R commission.
