Oh I would definitely get mega trained and practice at the rangeTake some training. Most people go for handguns, but, depending upon your circumstances, I'd go with a pump shotgun. Depending upon your size, a 20 gauge with #4-#6 shot is great for home defense. 12 gauge is better if you can handle it. While it's really hard on the drywall it doesn't travel through several walls like pistol and rifle loads. The larger the shot #, the smaller the pellets.
You can get a descent one for under $300. Cheaper at a pawn shop.

I kinda like the long gun idea
They are harder to use to snuff your self
One reason I have always hesitated getting a hand gun is the fear of someone getting ahold of it to snuff themselves with.

A good plan. There's the physical training of learning to handle a firearm proficiently including clearing jams, dud rounds, cleaning, etc and also tactical usage. This is why the White Nationalists love paintball games. Laser tag is another training exercise.
For someone looking to build up a small armory for self-defense, in order I recommend these:
1. Pump shotgun
2. 9mm semi-automatic handgun
3. Large caliber semi-automatic, magazine fed rifle.
Trying these out before buying with someone who has them is a great way to learn how to shoot them and how they shoot.
