Take some training. Most people go for handguns, but, depending upon your circumstances, I'd go with a pump shotgun. Depending upon your size, a 20 gauge with #4-#6 shot is great for home defense. 12 gauge is better if you can handle it. While it's really hard on the drywall it doesn't travel through several walls like pistol and rifle loads. The larger the shot #, the smaller the pellets.

You can get a descent one for under $300. Cheaper at a pawn shop.
