I'll share a quick ancedotal story with you. We're friends with this Canadian couple (they live in the Bay Area). They have two daughters in high school. (The mom was telling my wife and I this story). Both their girls are on the swim team. One girl on the swim team goes by "they". She (the mom) called "they" by the wrong pronoun at home (not in front of her but in conversation with her daughters). Her daughters were so pissed and offended they didn't talk to their mom for a few days.
It was pretty funny to hear the mom tell the story. She said she wasn't trying to be offensive. The whole pronoun thing is new to her like it is to many of us. When you've gone your whole like referring to people as he or she it's not instinctual to refer to someone as they.
The other interesting thing she said is both her daughters refer to themselves as bi-sexual. She said neither date girls or hook up with them but it's about showing solidarity or something along those lines with those who are.
My daughter is not yet three so I haven't had to deal with this yet. In due time I'm sure I will.
It’s easy to joke about this stuff but many kids are going to grow up to be very confused and unhappy people on account of it.
