Trump had classified documents at his FL home which the FBI retrieved after raiding the house.
On Jan. 6, 2021, Trump egged on a rabid crowd to go to the capitol and fight, which they took to mean breach the capitol and try to physically stop the validation of the election.

Garland decided when Daffy Donald declared he was running again, it changed things. He turned over 1-6 and classified documents theft over to Smith. Trump is not too bright, but he did come up with running earlier than anyone ever did before would give him some protections. Garland apparently thought so, so he appointed Smith to drill down.
