Gaetz justifies 'no' vote on insulin cap bill by saying diabetics should lose weight

there has been no change in the production of insulin for decades, only delivery method (prefilled pens vs syringes). There is no "requisite" rise in cost due to simple volume. This excuse is idiotic.

its made of synthesized bacteria, the cost is quite low. They take advantage as type 1 diabetics like my daughter literally cannot live without it. Type 2 diabetics could theoretically lose weight but in my case my prostatic limits what exercise I can do.

Big Pharma makes a mint on insulin, I get that, but they made a good profit on it when it was cheap(er) too.
I hope your daughter is doing well. It’s a terrible disease.

Wrong. Both my dad and brother developed Type II DM in their elder years. Neither one was/is ever overweight. Same with my only male cousin. My son-in-law died in 2020 from uncontrolled DMII. He was six foot tall and weighed 170 at his death at the ripe old age of 44. His family has a strong history of diabetes; his mother had lost both of her feet.

You are right though that it can be prevented and/or treated with lifestyle changes, including losing weight if needed, and restricting carbs (modified keto diet).

Family history. The risk of type 2 diabetes increases if your parent or sibling has type 2 diabetes.

Race and ethnicity. Although it's unclear why, people of certain races and ethnicities — including Black, Hispanic, Native American and Asian people, and Pacific Islanders — are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than white people are.

Blood lipid levels. An increased risk is associated with low levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol — the "good" cholesterol — and high levels of triglycerides.

Age. The risk of type 2 diabetes increases as you get older, especially after age 45

Exactly.

One point we're missing here is this: Whether you believe diabetes is caused by lifestyle (obesity) or not, as CelticGuy pointed out, it is unconscionable that America allows the pharmaceutical companies to charge exorbitant rates for a medication that has been around for a century, that is cheaply and easily made.

HUH?? You don't have to exercise to lose weight, you fool. Cut back on the snickers bars.

It was PRES.MORON WHO CANCELLED THE INSULIN CAP PRES.TRUMP HAD MADE LAW.

Biden Administration Rescinds Trump Administration Insulin Pricing Rule

https://www.policymed.com/2021/10/b...rump-administration-insulin-pricing-rule.html
A hastily penned EO by trump when he was plotting the terrorist attack on the Capitol.

It is riddled with incompetence and unnecessary burden on the few providers it includes in the program.

Biden is pushing to get legislation through, which Senate Republicans will bock.

I agree, we need universal healthcare like other industrial countries.
The insulin was not a law. Presidents cannot cancel laws.https://apnews.com/article/fact-checking-845638742817

And when you read the article, the insulin cap was never in place. It was just proposed and never finalized and would have been expensive for health care providers while only applying to a small number of those needing insulin.

Like that's gonna happen. Remember when NY wanted to ban restaurants, fast food, etc. from selling any soft drinks bigger than 16 ounces?

I said should happen, knowing full well it won't. Even Thailand is not immune, I was in a KFC recently waiting for the missus to finish her dentist appointment and was astounded at the number of obese teens, that's a recent phenomenon sadly.

"Causing" so much Type 2 diabetes? Nobody's forcing people to patronize those places and get the food shoved down their throats.

Why are you getting so aerated? Type 1 diabetes is genetic for the most part but Type 2 is invariably lifestyle related. Are you advocating shovelling pills down people's throats rather than eating healthily?

Sure, I want people to eat healthy. I'm saying you can't force them to do so, and the idea of slapping a tax on fast food restaurants is crazy. I can just hear repubs screaming "government overreach," like they did when Michelle Obama wanted schools to put healthier options on the cafeteria menu. You must remember how JPP righties freaked out about that.
