I was just on Shelby's website where they sells their Windsor and FE aluminum block crate engines.
Every single one carbureted, including the high-end Weber versions.
No EFI in sight.

EFI is so much more pleasant in normal street driving, but I suppose "pleasant" isn't what Cobra is all about, come to think of it.
I've got [EFI-converted from mechanical] Rochester Ram-Jet in the Corvette. Runs like a Rolex, and more quiet with the hydraulic rollers than with the flat solids.
With modern valve spring technology, we can have a lot more lift and less duration/overlap than on the original cam.

You, however, are a purist, and that's good too.
I'm too old to have the patience to be TOO original, I guess.

It's a stock bore 427 side oiler, except for cam and pistons. Cast iron side-oiler block, '65 medium riser heads, '65 intake and a 750 double pumper. Basically what was in it when it was in it in 1965.
I have considered fuel injection, but I'd have to drill a hole in the gas tank, mig weld in a threaded inlet and run a return line. Way too much work and expense. I did briefly read where some company makes a returnless fuel injection, but since I already have almost $30k invested in this engine, bell housing and clutch, that is on the back burner at this time. But yeah, fuel injection is the way to go, especially for easy starting and street driving.

Lots of Cobras have small blocks in them anymore, but i wanted a period correct drivetrain (except for the Jag independent suspension rear end). The chassis was set up for a big block, I could have thrown a 390 in it but as you said, I am a purist and want it as period correct as I can make it. That will increase the resale value (or it should) when it comes time to sell it and buy a '70 Mustang MACH I.

I would love to have a '64 Lincoln Continental phaeton with unibody-to-full-frame-chassis reconfiguration and a Ford F-250 Super Duty 7.3 engine and 10R140 tranny.
The Megazilla version is coming out as a crate soon. That puts out over 500 lbs. ft. from 2000 rpm to redline, and 675 peak!
You need that when you take a very heavy car and make it heavier still with a full frame.

Just a dream, at this point, though. I'm happy that I can still get in and out of the Corvette, albeit not with the top up anymore!

The Cobra was the dream of an 8 yr. old back when I first saw one. Naturally I can't afford what I saw as a kid, so a replica was the only option. The replica has a solid 2X4 frame, rack and pinion steering and the aforementioned Jag rear with a fully adjustable front and rear suspension. Better than the original, and this 427 has 50+ more HP than the original big block did. Over 500 HP and over 500 ft. lbs. of torque in a one ton car with a 90 inch wheelbase can be fun, but must be respected.

The '70 Mustang BOSS 429 is my favorite Mustang, but again, there's no way I could afford one, so it comes down to the '70 428 MACH I, but it has to be a solid car if I make the decision to get rid of the Cobra.
Yes, it's a good thing the Cobra doesn't have a top, that would make it pretty difficult to get in without burning my leg on the hot sidepipes. Coordination isn't quite what it once was.
