Feds intercept 1,300 barrels of meth precursor chemicals shipped from China to Mexico

Pirro said that 1,300 barrels containing 363,000 pounds of benzyl alcohol and 334,000 pounds of N-Methylformamide were seized from two different vessels on the high seas. Both chemicals, Pirro said, are precursor chemicals that could have been used to produce 420,000 pounds of methamphetamine.
Both are very common in many, many uses. Usually precursors would be considered those that are under restriction because they are rarely used. I guess they could be used to create meth, but would not usually be considered precursors.

It is true. If a huge profit in drugs can be made, someone will provide. In this case, China. We have destroyed cartel after cartel, and the drugs keep coming. Interdiction is a huge waste of money.
We have to deal with those who take drugs. We need a huge system of high quality rehab and drug education. We need to provide some drugs so the user will not have to commit crimes to feed the addiction. Using should be decriminalized and treated. Storing them in jails is super expensive and does not work.
Ya nordie. Some states have said, 'Okay, everything is legal.' Workin'n out well in Oregon.

Some drugs will always get through but we CAN significantly reduce supply.
No we cannot.

We can only very temporarily reduce the supply ON ROUTE, with new shipments following shortly thereafter.

The only thing these short interruptions do is raise the price on the street of the drugs and increase profits to the drug dealers.

So if you kill a drug lord or wipe a cartel another minor player rises to fill the gap instantly and steps up their supply.

as long as the customers are addicted and their demand does not waver, someone will supply it.

I'm sure you are a long time consumer of crack and are hopeful that it's supply will remain the same. Trump is going to drive it cost up by reducing supply so save your welfare check because crack cost is about to skyrocket.

So we should just ignore the cartels who are pumping poison into the United states?

:oprah:
We have been doing that since Nixon. Some of us learn. We have to take the market away. That is, as I said, done with a huge investment in getting people off drugs. They send drugs here because we buy and use them. They will continue to send them until the market goes away.
How many cartels have we taken down ? Did that solve the problem? Nope, a new one comes in, and they are a bit smarter.
We have to take the profit out.

Which only brings FAR MORE supply in to the system.

When you drive up price but have ADDICTS whose demand is not price sensitive that only makes for more gangs to come in to the space and more product to be produced and sold.

This is not just for drugs but any product. it is Supply and Demand 101 stuff.

Inelastic demand met with price increases and product shortages leads to opportunity for more suppliers to move in to the market as any product produced in this market will be far more profitable then it was before Trump actions were taken.

Do you understand that? Do you dispute the basic economics of it?

Put another way that even the poorly educated should understand as would be posed in a basic Econ Class.

Question:

- food production is often low paid and struggles for workers
- with a wave of your hand you manage to wipe out 2/3rds of all production
- food demand is inelastic so prices shoot up immensely for the diminished supply

What is the next result now that prices for production have shot way up?

A : with higher wages for workers available and higher profits for producers the existing producers ramp up production and many new producers and workers jump in the market

B: Food demand drops off and new supply and workers do not come.

I think the above is the most basic test question you might get asked in a grade 7 Econ class so i am hopeful magats can answer it.
