Fatal shooting at Denver screening of The Dark Knight Rises

I don't think a gun safety class would have helped this kid. A red alert of someone buying this much ammo could lead to an agent knocking on his door asking questions that may have inconvenienced him, but saved the lives of those in Aurora.

He was a pretty bright lunatic. After all, he managed a masters degree in neuroscience. If he knew the bulk ammo purchases were being tracked, he would have simply purchased smaller quantities at different places, and/or spaced them out over time. This was not a "spur of the moment" decision of his.

I am belaboring being called an irresponsible gun owner. Considering the amount of time and effort I have put into my hobby, and being safe at it, that should be understandable.

On the topic of responsible, I don't think removal of all privately owned firearms is the answer, do you?

I hate guns, but I understand that I am in the minority. My aunt was killed by a rifle that was used to kill farm animals and for hunting, it was a terrible accident, nonetheless, I realize there is responsible gun ownership, but I do not believe it is necessary to own an assault weapon. There is only one purpose for those weapons. There has to be strict regulations on these types of weapons if an individual wishes to own them.

None of these guns were "rapid" fire....All, including the AR-15 were semi-auto. Terminology is important.

Being able to kill and maim over 50 people in a short amount of time isn't rapid fire? Dear gawd, then what is considered " rapid fire"?

Who the hell makes these definitions?

I am a pretty sane gun owner. I do hunt with a rifle that many people would consider an "assault rifle". I use it, not because it is an assault weapon, but because it is very accurate and allows for quick 2nd and 3rd shots. Several times I have killed 2 coyotes at one calling. And on one occasion I got 3. That allows me to remove a dangerous pest from my "neighborhood".

Yesterday, Charles Krauthammer(FOX commentator and psychiatrist)said much the same thing. He noted that since Columbine, gun laws have gotten more draconian, but the way our legal system deals with the mentally ill has become increasingly timid because of concerns about civil liberties. It's become damn near impossible to involuntarily commit someone. Not to mention the parents and loved ones of these tormented souls are not helping. I understand one of the parents of the suspect said, when contacted by police, "yeah, you got the right guy". I wonder what the parents knew?
Have you any knowledge of Colorado gun laws?

Saint Ronney dumped the mental patients onto the sidewalks to save money...they're still there. There is damned little help for people who want or need to access mental health care and it's the recent passing of the affordable healthcare act that allowed children to stay on their parents health insurance. There are many reasons why this happened and I'll be damned if I'll join anyone in an effort to point fingers at the parents or in particular the mother in an effort to change the national discussion on our gun laws and our violent, selfish culture. Krauthammer is a hack by the way...I'd look elsewhere for information.

What does the amount of ammunition a person holds, have to do with whether or not a person will "nut" out and start shooting up innocent people?

Six thousand rounds would be an alert, then a qualified agent could determine if the person is a "nut"

I think "rapid fire" is an appropriate description of two of teh 3 weapons he carried. They were not fully automatic, but they were certainly rapid fire.

That said, the world record for rapid fire, including enough targets to require a reload, is held by a man who used a double action revolver. I can rapid fire my lever action 45-70Govt pretty well, although reloading is slow.

Actually, the rapid fire is not as big an issue to me. If I were to snap and decide to go on a killing spree, it would not be with the two rifles I own that fit the "assault rifle" description. One of my hunting rifles would be far more dangerous. Think about the pair that terrorized the country shooting from the trunk of the car. They weren't particularly good at shooting, in my opinion. Pretty much anyone I have ever hunted with could do better with their deer rifle. And the ratio of killed to wounded would be much worse.

A person with a rifle would not be able to storm a theater and do damage this young man did in a short period of time, the worst in our history.

No. Rapid fire is a term used when discussing full auto, or machine guns.

That is exactly right. the gov't has made it virtually impossible to commit someone until AFTER they harm someone or themselves. In other words, we can only hope they fail on their first attempt.

Not sure where you claim that definition came from, but rapid fire means the ability to fire a series of shots rapidly. The AR15 and the Glock certainly are capable of "rapid fire".

Capable? Yes...But, unless modified to fire automatically, then no, they are semi-auto rifles.

It is in the act of reloading that many shooters have been brought down.

This is another thing that needs to be monitored, like fertilizer purchases and sudafed! If your name appears on a list too many times, then an agent needs to pay you a visit to see why you are purchasing a great deal of ammo. Now I am talking ammunition for an assault weapon if we are going to allow people to own them.

I would think that a semi auto AR15 would be capable of 200 rounds a minute, as a semi auto. You can certainly empty a 30 round magazine in short order.

No, not fully auto, but certainly rapid fire.
