Explaining the Trump loyalty cult phenomenon

Charismatic authority is an affective bond between a leader and their supporters. To sustain this bond, the charismatic leader must constantly 'prove that he himself is the master willed by God'. Supporters need to perceive the leader as being successful in their mission and endowed with extraordinary qualities, which the followers accept without question.

An idealistic sense of a radical mission is the essential feature, coupled with personal authority and extraordinary qualities that set the leader apart from ordinary folk. Those qualities include great confidence, personal presence, rhetorical skills, the ability to present themselves as a member of their followers' community, and Manichean demonisation (targeting of enemies).

Donald Trump has managed to radicalise the Republican party. His charismatic authority created a putative ‘cult’ following of loyal supporters. The unsuccessful assassination attempt on his life in July 2024 allowed Trump to claim his 'God-given' mandate. Supporters' loyalty resulted in Trump becoming a twice-elected president. Some of those supporters, who followed their leader's call to storm the Capitol Building in 2021, ended up convicted felons.

The Blue Team enabled this.

They enabled the cult?
Yes. I’ve said this many times before.
The left went extreme so the right did too.
The right extreme won. The left extremists lost. Mainly due to their unpopular positions on culture war issues, IMO.
If the left had nominated a moderate he/she would’ve won and there’d be no Trump.

What we see here is the same pattern of the cult of the leader that led to the rise of fascism in Italy and Germany in the early 20th century.

Hannah Arendt identified a number of elements of totalitarianism and Trump and the Party of Trump, with his followers, exhibit every fucking one.
No, not violence.

It's pretty easy to explain. Stupid people value security over freedom and therefore submit to evil despots. Like trump.

Yep, I just saw a definition of the main elements of autoritarianism and it alligns perfectly with trumpism:

"The concentration of power in the hands of a small group of people who act in ways that are not constitutionally accountable to the people they are meant to represent and serve."

By nearly every measure, Trump is a bad human being. He has no redeeming qualities. He is not honest. He is not bright. He knows nothing of ecomics, history or science. His only talent is that he is a good con man. He knows how to use susceptible people. He expects 100 percent loyalty, which he does not return. He does not respect laws, deals, pacts or contracts. He cheats his workers and cheats at golf.
