Not all, but I agree most Americans agreed "Never forget" and decided to fix the problem once and for all.
As for the "20 year long Afghan war", that was an attempt to avoid repeating the mistake made after the Soviet-Afghan war beautifully summed up at the end of the movie "Charlie Wilson's War". The problem is as Fareed Zakaria once pointed out, in so many words, a nation has to be ready for a democracy, it can't be given to them.

Despite the lament, and while I agree the civilized nations of the world could have done better, the fact remains Afghanistan wasn't ready for democracy...even though it was on its way before the Soviets invaded.
