I find it interesting that Carter, who's a Southern Baptist, is being given as an example of liberal Christian evangelism........apparent their status within the sphere of Christianity has been shifting......I have attended a lot of liberal churches, how are you defining evangelical?
They used to be prohibited in the Officers Corp, if you had a tat, you were an enlisted man.
That it was a long long time ago.haven't reviewed my ancient Roman history in a long time.....if true, the significance is what?....

Wasn't the first ban instituted because sailors were getting tats in foreign ports where tatooing was "unsafe" because of the lack of medical sterilization regulations on tat parlors?
A couple of years ago I attended my first big conservative campus type church in Texas. There were probably three thousand people at the service. It was the first time I'd seen someone 'lift his name up' by holding their hands in the air during prayer. The service was during a Cowboy's game and I thought everyone was secretly listening to radios and the Cowboys had just scored or something. I'd just never seen it before.
Maybe I wrongly associate that act with more right leaning people but they do this at my small church now.
I had always heard that the charge for a tat was "destruction of gov't property" ... i.e. G.I. Joe.
I know my father, who was an army officer, told me that men he served with were prosecuted for getting tat's but that enlisted men were free to have them. He said that in the 1950's you could not get a commission if a tat was discovered during your physical.
President Carter left the Congregation of Southern Baptists. Due to their treatment of women.
Anyone here attend one? I think that's the best definition of my new church in SF. Pastor is a 30 year millenial with a tattoo sleeve on one arm.
Jimmy Carter may be one of the more famous evangelical liberals in the country which is neither here nor there he just came to mind. Just curious if any others attend a similar church
it is not what is on the outside that makes unclean. It is what is on the inside. people who call themselves "liberal christians" are those that are as whited sepulchres. in their heart/ soul is rebellion toward The Lord Jesus Christ. they disagree with the testimonies and judgements of The Lord [ and teach others to do so ]and replace it with outward shows of morality, publicly proclaimed "good works" and "progressive" ideaology. a "liberal Christian"" is basically an apostate which has departed from faith in The Lord Jesus Christ and goes after other gods/[devils]. the most prominent examples are those who mingle false eastern mysticism religions and those who proclaim "allah" Lucifer to be the same as or equal to The true and living God whose name is Jesus. IMO. it is good. everything is right on schedule.
I believe it.
I think they just gave up on prosecuting enlisted because there were just too many violations, costing them too many good men, so they looked the other way.
There are liberals among evangelical congregations for sure. Funny you mention tattoos ...
We have lots of people in our congregation with tattoos but I don't have any. We are very fundamental ... far from liberal. Had one guy come in with both arms tattooed and he was self conscious about it. I assured him he didn't have to wear a long sleeve shirt and that his leather vest was ok to wear. I had to convince him that nobody cared what he wore. He came regularly for a while and I started a bible study with him, baptized him after a few months. Baptized his future wife later then performed their wedding for them. They moved to Georgia to help take care of her folks. I still keep in contact. It's funny the stigma attached to tattoos.

What are those?
My personal opinion about tattoos is that they are a desecration of one of Gods Greatest Creations, but thats just me. I am a live and let live guy, no judgement for those with tats, its just why I would never have one.
