European union wont last

If the EU doesn't last the western world won't. We need them as a strong ally in the 21st century. Hopefully over the next century they get their act together and get over their differences, or we're all just going to be tributaries to China and India.

We don't need Europe. We have other, more reliable allies.

Like who?

There's no other bloc of countries in the world besides europe that is as rich and shares the same liberal and democratic vision of society. The western world needs to stick together; the EU needs to survive and hopefully turn into a functioning post-national state when the time is right (which may very wel be in centuries).

No, the white peoplez of the world do not have to unite. Other than the UK (who is not part of the EU, and tends to separate itself from "the Continent"), the other countries are generally not worthy of respect. Many of them are ready to implode, starting with Spain, and many of them are a drain on the EU (without Germany it would already be dead), such as Italy and Greece. Plus, there's the Muslim problem demonstrated most blatantly in the Netherlands, but also in France and just about everywhere else in some form.

I think our best bets for the future are Japan and Russia. Saying Russia could make a good ally may not be popular, but its practical. Russia shares our same threats to its power: Islamism and China. Minus the recent invasion of Georgia, we've gotten along with them remarkably well since 1991. India is also a good ally for the future, as its middle class continues to grow, and the old caste system has finally been dying out completely (plus, they also have a Muslim proble, and they are best positioned to help address an insanely unstable Pakistan).

Then there is Latin America. Not strategically located, geopolitically speaking, to deal with either the Chinese or Islamist threats, but they have several developing economies, and may make as good trading partners as China currently is (especially if we get a SAFTA), without the drawback of having to help rising military and nuclear threats.

‘The Euro Is Doomed’

The German chancellor’s comments followed a report from El Pais that French President Nicolas Sarkozy threatened to pull out of the euro unless Merkel agreed to back the European Union’s bailout plan at a meeting last weekend in Brussels, citing comments Spain’s Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero made at a meeting of socialist politicians. The Madrid- based newspaper didn’t say how it obtained the information. Aides to Sarkozy, Merkel and Zapatero all denied the report.

its destine to fail. No way they stay European union for long term.

I know you prob were not interested a decade ago, the Euro went as low as .81 to the dollar on first release and the same sentiments were bantered. Europe is much more inflation hawkish and less growth oriented than us that is largely why the euro is still $1.24. This is a bumb in the road and it will settle above the dollar.

this is nothing and some countries talking about pulling out of the euro. How about a major event like a war.

In talking about a future "war" you may well be correct, Chap. Not in terms of an international armed conflict but a war between stable northern European economies, pressured by their voters not to spend their tax-Euros on bailing out profligate southern European economies who have been going mad at the shops with Germany's credit card.

Whether the EU is finished, i don't know, but the goal of ever closer political union dreamt about by the European political elite for so long is surely now dead in the water. The Euro was a major plank in achieving political union, something which always seemed to outweigh the economic reality of implementing such a project. Some of us will be glad to see political union die a quick death.

The Euro is still 1.24 to the dollar, talk to me when the dollar is actually worth more.

give it a few months... it just broke a major support level.

Given what is occurring in Europe right now, I would be surprised if the Euro lasts. This was destined to fail. Eventually either Germany or France will pull out as their citizens will tire of bailing out other countries. My guess is Germany will be the one to pull out as they are generally more fiscally conservative than the majority of their Euro peers.

Greeks are a bunch of tax cheating bastards like southern man, yet they are only 5% of our labor force. Germany will bitchslap them around YET AGAIN!!
