There's no other bloc of countries in the world besides europe that is as rich and shares the same liberal and democratic vision of society. The western world needs to stick together; the EU needs to survive and hopefully turn into a functioning post-national state when the time is right (which may very wel be in centuries).
No, the white peoplez of the world do not have to unite. Other than the UK (who is not part of the EU, and tends to separate itself from "the Continent"), the other countries are generally not worthy of respect. Many of them are ready to implode, starting with Spain, and many of them are a drain on the EU (without Germany it would already be dead), such as Italy and Greece. Plus, there's the Muslim problem demonstrated most blatantly in the Netherlands, but also in France and just about everywhere else in some form.
I think our best bets for the future are Japan and Russia. Saying Russia could make a good ally may not be popular, but its practical. Russia shares our same threats to its power: Islamism and China. Minus the recent invasion of Georgia, we've gotten along with them remarkably well since 1991. India is also a good ally for the future, as its middle class continues to grow, and the old caste system has finally been dying out completely (plus, they also have a Muslim proble, and they are best positioned to help address an insanely unstable Pakistan).
Then there is Latin America. Not strategically located, geopolitically speaking, to deal with either the Chinese or Islamist threats, but they have several developing economies, and may make as good trading partners as China currently is (especially if we get a SAFTA), without the drawback of having to help rising military and nuclear threats.
