Elon Musk says he will make an alternative phone if Apple, Google ban Twitter

On Friday, Twitter owner Elon Musk, who also is the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, said that if Twitter is removed from app stores owned by Apple and Google, whose phones only use those systems, he would create an alternative phone.

Liz Wheeler wrote, "If Apple & Google boot Twitter from their app stores, @elonmusk should produce his own smartphone. Half the country would happily ditch the biased, snooping iPhone & Android. The man builds rockets to Mars, a silly little smartphone should be easy, right?"

Musk replied, "I certainly hope it does not come to that, but, yes, if there is no other choice, I will make an alternative phone."

On Friday, Taylor Lorenz used her latest column in the Washington Post to call for Apple and Google app stores to pull Twitter from their stores. This came after Musk announced that there will be a general amnesty for all banned accounts, following a poll of Twitter users..

Lorenz complains that Musk brought back conservative Christian satire site The Babylon Bee, who was banned by noting that Rachel Levine is a biological male. After Time Magazine awarded Levine "woman of the year," The Babylon Bee awarded Levine "man of the year."

On November 18, Musk noted how Apple and Google through their vertical integration have a duopoly on the market and wrote, "App store fees are obviously too high due to the iOS/Android duopoly. It is a hidden 30 percent tax on the Internet."

Musk followed up and tagged the antitrust division in the Department of Justice.

I doubt they are going to ban Twitter from the app stores, especially because there are literally thousands of different Twitter compatible apps out there...

But here is the question, can Musk create a new cell phone quickly? Obviously the claims he personally can do anything is nonsense, but can he get the staff together to build the software and hardware for a new smart cell phone.

With time and money, I suppose he can do anything. It would normally take a few years, and cost tens of billions. It would be more difficult for Musk, because he has been an asshole to so many computer engineers. There is an asshole tax they are going to charge him, and he will have to settle for less competent people.

I get the feeling he has reached the outer limit of money people are willing to invest in him, so he would have to come up with the money himself.

In the end, this could suck up all Musk's fortune, and leave him with a smart phone to compete with the established smart phones. So how would that smart phone sell?

The strength of Android and iPhone is they have a large app ecosystem. "Musk Phones" would not. People would have to spend several thousand dollars on a smart phone that does nothing outside Musk's "Everything" app. Customers would have to pay extra to become Musk's slaves.

He has done just fine without Walter’s advice and critiques.

Walter is just peeved that Twitter will no longer censor conservatives or provide cover for the far left politicians.

He could only break into the Android market. Android is open source, so he wouldn't have to worry about the OS, he'd just have to create a different "Playstore" from which to download and store the app. Apple devices will NOT use open-source apps, so I don't know how Elon would break into that market. I don't think iPhone users will give up their phones just to use Twitter.

Android is open source, but it is difficult to implement without using the Google app store. The Chinese have not figured out a way to do it, and they have poured over a hundred billion dollars into it.

It just is not happening.

In fairness, I doubt Twitter is going to be banned from app stores, so it is not happening on many levels. Musk and the alt right is just trying to generate fake good news stories.

More proof Elon is paranoid and slipping his gears. Both Apple and Google carry Truth Social. Why would they ban Twitter and not Truth Social? Besides, millions of customers would be pissed and demand Congress "do something".

you don't need a new phone if they won't sell your app in their stores.......you just need to make your app available on your own website.......
