Civil marriage isn't the same as religious marriage already. I don't really care if it's called a "civil marriage" or a "civil union". There just needs to be a legal system put in place to deal with these situations.
Again, read my proposal. That is exactly what I am suggesting. We remove government completely from the "marriage" business! There is no more issue regarding whether marriage is religious or civil, or whether this is a civil rights issue, or whether something is unfair on unequal to any group. It take ALL of that off the table forever. It solves the problem and settles the issue once and for all, and we can move on to bigger and better things to argue about. The gays are happy because they can get the benefits and perks they want, the religious people are happy because they can protect the sanctity of traditional marriage, and politicians are happy because they don't have to 'take sides' anymore. It's a Win-Win-Win for everybody.
The ONLY blowback I am getting, is from partisan hacks who just want the ISSUE because they get a lot of political mileage from it. The extremists on the right can continue to claim a moral 'high ground' and rally around that, and the extremists on the left can continue likening this to Civil Rights and bash the right with it. They enjoy having AN ISSUE, they don't care about, and are not interested in RESOLVING the issue, even if they get everything they want! It's amazing to me!
