Do soldiers fight for a flag, or what it represents?

This thread has already been pretty illuminating.
There are really profound differences of opinion regarding what it means to be an American.
I don't think it's as divided as it seems on the surface. I think most of us are patriotic and value being an American.
So the concept (hopefully)remains the same no matter how you look at symbols like the flag

Exactly. What it REPRESENTS.
You're getting it now.
well the flag is a symbol, and symbols have great powers.
What i'm trying to to say-since i think your thread motivation is a sincere debate-is debasing the flag is more then debasing a "cloth"

one is then debasing the symbol of being an American. Obviously it's a piece of cloth ( made in China. lol)
but the symbolism of the USA transcends that little cloth

But what is it a symbol of? What does it represent?

Obviously, the flag represents all kinds of different things to different people. But I'd be surprised if we couldn't find a consensus that the top of the list would be LIBERTY.

As a former soldier, I would for what it represents! Freedom of the press, freedom to worship or not at all, freedom of speech[FONT=Roboto, arial, sans-serif], free of assembly, freedom to protest and petition, to name a few!

They also fought for those that have the right to speak about him sitting. Don't forget that, son.

Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness according to the Declaration .

Symbols are evocative. when I look at it i see the entire history of the USA - good bad and ugly.
The more i look at it - the more US history I run thru my mind.

Others see other things-i wouldn't try to enumerate since everyone has different perspectives

That picture could support either view, imo. When I see it, I go right to what that flag represents.

Otherwise, it's just a piece of cloth.

The view is of those who planted it in the name of and representing the country for which it stands. This is not difficult. You can hijack the view to fit your own personal beliefs of what you personally want it to represent. In the end it doesn't change the facts of what happened that day and why those men planted the American flag.

your brain is dead

they fight for the people

when they breathed their last breath they did not imagine the flag

they imagined the people they fought for

wives , daughters, sons, brothers

the flag is a piece of cloth

you must be a russian RM

I don't know what uniform you wore, but mine didn't have any red stars on it, and nobody referred to it as "the people's army". I served the American Republic, and I imagine it's only natural to think about the people you love with your dying breath. But in general we serve the country(and the flag is a sacred symbol of the country), because if the country does not endure, the American people will not either.

And America is about liberty.

You don't seem to have grasped that yet.

Yes. So? Get to the point already. What did you see here posted anywhere by anybody who argues with that?

You chum the waters here evidently looking for just the right fish...so what's the right fish? Lots of people have given their specific viewpoint on this "discussion"...except you.

This thread is another emotive exercise in stupidity by the cartoonish Thing.

I didn't even want to post in it, but the idea that every soldier "fights" for the same reasons is ludicrously laughable.

This is the kind of emotion-laden crap that feminized hysterical beta males like little Thingy come up with when they watch too much daytime TV.

Hilarious.

The flag represents what is being fought for, except to fucktards like you

Maybe, or maybe not.

I suspect that soldiers as individuals are too complex in their motivations to pigeonhole.

Does anyone seriously think that there is a standard philosophical reason for enlisting in the armed forces?

Perhaps an estrogen-enriched soy boy like Thingy believes that people line up at recruitment stations to defend the right of pro athletes to kneel for a few seconds a week.

If so, I invite him to prove it, and I'll understand if if he can't.

Likewise anyone one who thinks people are consciously deciding to enter the service to protect a scrap of fabric or some notional ideas of "patriotism".

Everyone has their own reasons.

Silly thread by a silly man.

It's not trolling. It's just going to the heart of what it means to be American.

Nothing is really being said that I didn't know, but I think it's an interesting discussion.

Confirmation bias trolling from Thingy, then.

Sad little feminized Thingy. This is the result of watching too much housewife TV during the day, isn't it?

"You're getting it now"? You actually think you're TEACHING anybody anything? Well please enlighten us, Sensei, why the hell do you think some people get upset when they see that symbol disrespected? What are we missing when we see some dumbass millionaire jocks dishonor the flag every Sunday, Monday, and Thursday? Or see a bunch of masked cowards carrying flags of their own, throw the flag that represents everything good about my country to the ground and set it on fire? Is this "protest" so subtle and sophisticated that mere conservatives cannot grasp it's intent?

This entire thread is another cry for attention from a sad little man who's unable to accept the results of last year's election.

He needs help that an online forum simply can't provide. Does Obamacare cover testosterone replacement therapy?

When people were sick of being overtaxed by the Britts the US flag was born, it has been the symbol that preserved freedom Worldwide since it has existed. The Commie Pinko faggots in the NFL are to fucking comatose and braindead to know that the US flag is what Lincoln handed to Grant as he told him to burn the South plantations and not come back until every man woman and child were free. You have no concept of either history or current reality, which is why you exist in the way that you do
