I don't think it's as divided as it seems on the surface. I think most of us are patriotic and value being an American.
So the concept (hopefully)remains the same no matter how you look at symbols like the flag
well the flag is a symbol,and symbols have great powers.
What i'm trying to to say-since i think your thread motivation is a sincere debate-is debasing the flag is more then debasing a "cloth"
one is then debasing the symbol of being an American. Obviously it's a piece of cloth ( made in China. lol)
but the symbolism of the USA transcends that little cloth

Obviously, the flag represents all kinds of different things to different people. But I'd be surprised if we couldn't find a consensus that the top of the list would be LIBERTY.
As a former soldier, I would for what it represents! Freedom of the press, freedom to worship or not at all, freedom of speech[FONT=Roboto, arial, sans-serif], free of assembly, freedom to protest and petition, to name a few!

Symbols are evocative. when I look at it i see the entire history of the USA - good bad and ugly.
The more i look at it - the more US history I run thru my mind.
Others see other things-i wouldn't try to enumerate since everyone has different perspectives
The view is of those who planted it in the name of and representing the country for which it stands. This is not difficult. You can hijack the view to fit your own personal beliefs of what you personally want it to represent. In the end it doesn't change the facts of what happened that day and why those men planted the American flag.

I don't know what uniform you wore, but mine didn't have any red stars on it, and nobody referred to it as "the people's army". I served the American Republic, and I imagine it's only natural to think about the people you love with your dying breath. But in general we serve the country(and the flag is a sacred symbol of the country), because if the country does not endure, the American people will not either.

I suspect that soldiers as individuals are too complex in their motivations to pigeonhole.
Does anyone seriously think that there is a standard philosophical reason for enlisting in the armed forces?
Perhaps an estrogen-enriched soy boy like Thingy believes that people line up at recruitment stations to defend the right of pro athletes to kneel for a few seconds a week.
