They aren’t… that’s an untrue story.

They are. There is a reason, for example, that U-Haul has run out of trucks in the SDTC. They will actually pay people to deadhead trucks back so more can rent them to leave.
I was in the SDTC two years ago. It's grim. Abandoned ranches and orchards (no water!), abandoned homes, roads so badly maintained they are almost gravel, bankrupt cities and counties, lawlessness, etc.

Some are leaving to take advantage of lower cost of living, or better weather… plenty are finding they hate it and are going back.

Hallucination. They are not moving back.
