march 13 2023Teachers and activists are pushing for high schools to drop their calculus courses to increase equity as many minority and low-income students don’t have access to the class, according to The 74, a nonprofit news organization covering education.

In the 2017-2018 school year, 76% of schools with “low student of color enrollment” offered calculus while 52% of schools with a high proportion of students of color offered the advanced math course, according to a Learning Policy Institute report. The course, teachers and activists argued, is disproportionately offered to students not of an underrepresented group, giving other students an advantage in the college admissions process, according to The 74.

“I am rightfully worried that the disproportionate focus on calculus is unfairly excluding students, particularly students who come from backgrounds that have been historically excluded — and are still being excluded — from STEM majors and the well-paying careers that can follow,” Sarah Spence Adams, professor of mathematics at Olin College of Engineering in Needham, Massachusetts, told the outlet.

4. Out of 1725 chess grandmasters in the world, only THREE are black.

5. 50 years of affirmative action special treatment and blacks have fallen even further behind. What does that tell you?

Unless you're going into engineering or science, you don't need calculus.

Statistics and probability theory are more important for high school students to learn.

Geometry, Algebra II and precalculus is all the college prep a high school student needs if they are aspiring for a college STEM degree

well considering the appalling performance of teaching math in public schools it seems pointless unless you limit it to honors classes.

If you're good at math, you're good at everything. That's why i favor emphasizing math even for kids that won't need it.

The trouble is teacher salaries are based on seniority even though math teachers are much rarer and more valuable than say english teachers. Advanced math teachers in HS should get $150,000 a year.

Most math teachers were taught how to teach math but don't actually know much math.

Calculus has its uses in statistics and probability too. It is also useful in a range of areas within industry.

I've mostly used it in doing statistics. It is used in PID controllers in industry all the time, but that's different in that the controller is doing the math not me, but knowing how they work is useful in setting them up.

In statistics I use calculus to do non-linear and complex curve regression analysis.
