Growing up everyone always stood for the National Anthem and removed their hats... and if you didn't you were reminded gently but firmly... actually it's still that way today....;) You can see lots of videos where the loudspeaker playing anthem malfunctioned but the crowd carries on loud and proud...

At any rate, we went to several games every summer. There were many people who didn't stand for the anthem for whatever reasons. No one said anything or thought anything of it.
