"Among the initiatives that could be cut are $50 million for the National Endowment for the Arts, $14 million for cyber security research by the Homeland Security Department, $1 billion for the National Science Foundation, $400 million for research and prevention of sexually transmitted diseases, $850 million for Amtrak and $400 million for climate change research. But so far, none of the suggestions come close to being enough to shrink the package on the scale proposed "
Personally, I don't think some of that stuff belongs in a STIMULUS package; I definitely think the climate stuff doesn't, but have defended the NEA funding, since there are lots of jobs there.
I agree that it isn't the time to get nitpicky, but it also wouldn't shock me if they put stuff like this in to begin with as bait & planned on cutting it, just to show some compromise. The fundamental intent & structure of the bill is not really changed. Also, it's my understanding that they have scheduled a vote, so I don't think they plan to get mired in this stuff; from what Obama is saying, he's pushing it forward.
The GOP is truly pissed, btw. Lindsey Graham just made a big statement about how Obama isn't including them & showing leadership, which stands in such contrast to so many comments on this board regarding how Obama is letting them run w/ the bill...
