Proposition 16: A return to affirmative action


If Proposition 16 passes, it would bring back affirmative action, allowing race, ethnicity and gender to be considered in awarding government contracts and in deciding admission to the state’s colleges and universities.

It’s been 24 years since California voters considered whether race, ethnicity and gender should be considered in awarding government contracts and admission to the state’s colleges and universities. The politics and demographics of the state were far different in 1996, when such considerations were outlawed with Proposition 209, an amendment to the California Constitution.

This ballot measure is only nine words long. It would simply repeal Proposition 209, allowing the practice often described as affirmative action to again be used in state. It was added to the ballot by the Legislature last month, setting up a discussion about systemic racism and inequities at the same time as a national reckoning on these topics.

affirmative action is not discriminatory. there is nothing wrong with wanting people in administrative positions to closer reflect the people they serve. if two applicants are equal, more or less, and there are 20 white men already employed in similar jobs, and 2 women, and 2 black, what would be wrong with hiring a woman or a black under those circumstances to balance out the demographics? why are you so afraid of competition as if white people have a tougher time finding a job than any other demographic?

two people with equal talent and skills. a need by government agencies to more closely reflect the society they serve. if 20 black guys were employed, and it was between a white guy and a black guy, why not pick the white guy? how is that discriminatory?

fuck you. it is good that white kids go to schools with black teachers and black principals and black kids go to schools with white teachers and white principals, as a matter of course, and that blacks see cops in their neighborhood who are black, and they see black judges and district attorneys on tv and in the news, and black mayors, etc. the more diversity, the better. you are a racist asshole. fuck you.
