I think John McWhorter presents a good argument. I haven't bought his latest book, but I plan on it.

I go to lots of apartments in the barrio and hood to fix stuff. I have 'cute' names for many of the complexes...

What's funny is that the worst assholes aren't people in these apartments. They are truly appreciative I show up and fix their problems. The assholes are all in the high end places like Scottsdale where they think I'm some sort of low brow, knuckle dragging, moron who's shown up because I have no choice about fixing their shit. These are usually the elitist sort that went to college and have some drudge of a mediocre office job and think their shit doesn't stink.
They're the sort of White, elitist, Progressive, assholes who think that because they got a degree from wherever they're superior to me, as I listen to them prattle on and think I have more education than this asshole does, and far more experience...
