Could Paula Deen's words bring down her empire?

Bullshit, Jews don't require some code word for "the final solution" even though when it came out of a nazi's mouth it was pure evil. Not to mention lots of anti-semites use the word Jews so that it drips with venom. We don't say "the J word". We say queer now, even though it was a negative word for so long. I am not advocating the use of the word nigger in everyday conversation. I am just saying, when we are having discussions like this, it is overly PC to completely avoid the word when saying "the N-word" makes every single person think "nigger".

We don't say "the J-word" because "Jew" isn't taboo to begin with. But there are plenty of epithets like "kike" or "hebe" that we don't use, not for any faux-PC reasons but out of common decency to others. I wish people would stop taking the words as "PC or non-PC", and look at not using slurs as promoting the basic etiquette we hopefully were all taught as children.

Yep. Being PC only indicates good manners IMO. It comes down to not being an asshole.

Sez who. I think it is a function of white privilege to assume or claim to know what others find offensive, and for those others to have to defend their outrage or feelings.

I mean, if you REALLY get outraged over a 66 year old southern woman using the n-word 30 years ago....well, have at it.

Do you live your life in a state of ourtrage, then? Because I can guarantee you that there are a few million southern women who used the n-word 30 years ago.

My wife reminded me this morning that I had used the word myself in the past- to describe the rantings of an asshole racist that had used the word in a public meeting where I was the presenter. That was over 20 years again in an upstate NY farming town (all rednecks, crackers and honkies), and they were absolutely shocked.

Okay, we have had this discussion long enough. I understand your points and though I disagree, I will refrain from typing out any epithet in it's entirety out of respect for those of you that are offended by it no matter the context. Like Patton Oswalt I can learn and adapt,

I just want to clarify one thing, the "slave motifs" wedding was in 2007, the use of the word was 30 years ago. I also found her appearance on the talk show, and telling her black friend not to stand next to the black wall because she can't see him, offensive, but that is just me.

I think she sunk her own boat, she could have quietly settled her lawsuit, she should have thought it through, putting herself on the alter of public opinion was a big mistake.

lol....now its a "slave motif" wedding.....liberals are so creative....

and actually, its the trial lawyers that sunk their own boat....by releasing the deposition they've probably bankrupted her, leaving their clients with nothing.....

She admitted as much though she did call it a southern plantation motif

You remember the good ol days christie?

The days when two adults could actually converse with civility and not have to resort to vulgarity every third word?

I agree that she hasn't done herself any favors. Her Today show appearance was just strange; it seemed really scripted.

But Paula Deen is not what's wrong w/ race relations in this country. The level of outrage has been way, way over the top on this one, imo. It's been said, but very few would make it through unscathed if every comment they made over the course of their lifetimes made it to the front page.

Who said I was outraged? I'm bored to tears. I see chickens coming home to roost. If she had lied (and who has not told a white lie (no pun)?), and said she had never actually used the n-word (or wanted a staged antebellum wedding complete with slave attendants) then she wouldn't even be in this mess and stand to lose tens of millions of dollars in endorsements. How stupid of her not to come out, long ago, to head off a potential firestorm for her past missteps. Now she's radioactive.

One point I picked up on, the use of racist language was made close to 30 years ago.
30 years and no forgiveness?
From liberals who would release a murderer( of a non liberal ) in a matter of a few short years.

Now come on Zappa, you always used vulgar language at every person who was not a fanatical liberal totalitarian.

Not forgetting your vile lies about me trading barbs about your wife and daughter, never once did I insult your wife or daughter.
Or that you only use homophobic abuse against people who make homophobic posts.

Yet, never have I made a homophobic post.

You are such a childish, whiney liar aren't you!!
