Could Paula Deen's words bring down her empire?

So I suppose you cannot show Blazing Saddles anymore.

Oh, please. Perhaps one of the funniest and smartest movies of all time. Mel Brooks made sure he made fun of and/or offended everyone, equally. Parity I can live with, and even enjoy.

If there is one thing we've mastered as a country, it's manufactured outrage.

We're not so good at staying out of debt, or war, or at things like compassion. But when it comes to mustering up a frenzy over stuff that has no effect on us whatsoever, we're the best.

Sez who. I think it is a function of white privilege to assume or claim to know what others find offensive, and for those others to have to defend their outrage or feelings.

Ain't it the truth. If I ever throw racial epithets at poet or BAC I expects to get smacked down and banned for it. But if we, as adults, are discussing the Paula Dean issue and we are not using the words as insults, then offense is misplaced. When I took class in college and one of the things we discussed was Malcolm X, I discussed the concept of the house nigger without saying "the house N-word". That would have been fucking stupid, but I think that too many on the left would expect me to do just that.
Times have changed since you were in college. The water under the bridge has "overflowed" its' banks. The elephant in the middle of the living room is trashing all the furniture, and all that stuff "swept under the carpet", is now 10 ft. tall.

Bullshit, Jews don't require some code word for "the final solution" even though when it came out of a nazi's mouth it was pure evil. Not to mention lots of anti-semites use the word Jews so that it drips with venom. We don't say "the J word". We say queer now, even though it was a negative word for so long. I am not advocating the use of the word nigger in everyday conversation. I am just saying, when we are having discussions like this, it is overly PC to completely avoid the word when saying "the N-word" makes every single person think "nigger".
But you are advocating expressing the word, "as is", as long as it's not directed at a black person, which kind of misses the point. And still you wonder why.

I say, the black community gets decide when we drop the euphemisms. People use the N Word to avoid saying the slur. They do not use it in a non-academic sense, such as for attacks and general racism. The only exception will be in places like here, where having discussed it, racists such as Razor will likely start calling people N Words.

I agree with this. I also feel that men do this all the time regarding gender slurs. Letting us know when we are being "too sensitive".

For me, I'm not telling you what to write Soc, and it's not political correctness. It's simply that, like tekkychick mentioned, I too just do not even think that word. Yes, I literally think "n word". When someone writes n word, I do not think the full word. When I write it, that's how I think it. It's just a word that my mind flinches from. So what? Why would that bother anyone? I feel as if you are saying that I have to think that word and write that word, or I am somehow engaging in an attempt to censor you. It makes no sense.

Are you looking for somebody to throw that acid over? To my mind, anybody that carries a bottle of acid around with them at all times is more than slightly deranged.
